Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I cant decide, the Velomax are a tad cheaper and lighter the Mavic is a overall nicer looking wheel. They both have sealed bearings. I am 130lbs i will use the wheels for racing (cat5, maybe 4) and training.
Be different, get the Circuits. Best bang for the buck, who cares what they look like you can't really see wheels when they are spinning.

I've got about 5 - 6000 miles on my circuits. Great set of wheels. (I'm about 220) Not one broken spoke, never out of true.

I have to vote for the Mavics. Like a car, if you know you could have had the better looking model you will always think about it.

Personally I don't care too much for the look of the Mavic K-series. The rims look very boxy and tall... Makes them have a heavy look and then the top of the line is shaved which makes it look like they were too heavy and had to be shaved to catch up with others.
But they are still excellent wheels :)

Grampy,
tell me more about your velomax's...
Im weighing in at 200, the only problem with the roads down here are the railroad tracks, we have them on every route, every time. Usually in double sets, so you can't really hop them. Its bone jarring in the best of places.
Are the velomax as good as their website says?
I just got some Circuit Comps with my new frame as OEM option. Very smooth, low friction hubs, and a true wheel with high, uniform spoke tension. Velomax has a good rep around here with the local racers, and I like the whole design approach.
They seem to be stiff, with the 28mm aero rims and high spoke tension.
Was also concerned about breaking the double-threaded spokes, but have assurances they will be at least as good as the 32 spoke conventional wheels I'm used to. I weigh 168, and try to take it easy on the wheels by slowing or standing when possible. Will see how they hold up. If problems, or short service life, figure I can always go back to conventional built wheels.

considered topolinos?
i haven't ridden them, actually, but i'm dying to get my hands on a set. i've read report after report full of praise. they're light, strong, trick looking and yes, expensive, but if you're willing to spend the cost of ksyriums (SSCs, i assume?), the topolinos aren't all that much more dough.

You won't regret it my friend. i hope the weather will be nice to you up there so you can give em a good trial run soon.

the only trial i get is on that mother ****ing trainer, i hate that thing. I got the 10 hour 2001 tdf to help the time pass. Even with that is is still boring.

Grab one of those Air tran flights down to Atlanta and you can ride with us for a few days. I think you could fly down here for less than 100 bucks plus maybe a 50 dollar charge for the bike. Our cold weather is probably a heat wave for up there this time of year.

i really need to do that, and it's so cheap to fly. hmmmm

everyone on road bike review says heavy heavy heavy, i though they were pretty light. What is better for that price than those.

I've had excellent results with my Elites. Even on the trainer. But I read good things about the Velomax. And the American Classic 420.

DJBowen,
I'd go with the Velomax. They'er lighter and cheaper! What more can you ask for? I own a set of '02 Orions. I love them. Right now velomax has a deal where you can try them out for free. They have three retail shops in NY you can check out. Here is the Velomax LINK (http://www.velomax.com/DemoDays.php3)
The only bike I know of equipt with Gipiemme techno 24s is the R600, mine is orange. I am thinking about a new wheel set and am leaning towards the Circuits. I would love to hear how the Mavics affect the ride and stiffness of the bike, thanks

Here's another option:
For your weight, American Classic Sprint 350s - Extremely light clinchers, around $600, American Classic durability. ALso look into Nimble Spider wheels (very similar to AM Classic, uses their hubs)

Dj, I honestly can't tell you about the velomax's, but I do have set's of the Ksyriums, SSC, and just love they way the go fast and climb..So I'd say go with the Ksyriums, but that's just my personal preference.

i am not buying them at a store so i the only pair of velomax wheels i have the opt to buy are from a seller that says NO refunds if there messed up screw you prety much and wants another 15 bucks for the skewers that come with the wheels. the elites even come with hutchinson carbon tires and are new 03

are the 03 and 04 elites the same wheel? no big changes right?

Bought a pair of Campag Eurus in November. Great wheels. Cheaper and lighter than the Mavic K's. Extremely sturdy and very stiff 30 mm semi aero rims. Outstanding Record quality hubs which spin forever. Think they look better than most other wheels too.

i'm obviously biased here, as the elites have, imho the best, smoothest, troublefree hubs.
if you are 130lbs, the mavic rims will be nice as you are riding under 130-140 psi.
i have not experienced the velomax, and i'm sure that whatever you choose you will be happy with, but when everyone, to a man says that at $429, $499, $550....you won't care what you spent on the elites because the wheel is that good.
i'm racing cat5, and although heavier (i ride at 180lbs) the handling on the elites make it the best wheelset for me. at 130lbs, you might actually need a slightly heavier wheel for handling purposes on steep declines.
and on a c-dale, you can afford the few extra grams for the improved handling. how do you like your inflation? mavic recommends anywhere between 110 and 140psi, which will give you a nice wide range for your handling concerns (if any)

i have used the wheels once now, Long Island NY is pretty much a giant ice slick when it comes to anything that wasnt shoveled during the last snow/rain storm so i am not taking any chances. the one ride i did do was on the trainer so they didnt feel any different than the old ones. I also dont have a front derailleur right now so i dont know if i should even be riding outside. they look damn sweet as you can see above. Since the phota i added a Dura-Ace rear Der and SRam PC89r chain.

Bullet proof, trouble free and good for bigger riders.Lighter ones out there but like i said, lighter isnt always better.I dont want to true my wheelset and thats one of the reasons i got elites.
