I'm looking at a two-wheeled recumbent, and I'm wondering about carrying stuff. When I install the motor, the battery will most likely be on a rack in the back.
The paniers look like the solution, but it seems like they might affect balance. The other solution is to get one of the cool areodynamic bags and let it rest atop the battery on back, but it seems like too much weight for the back end.
Any ideas? Has anyone successfully rigged a basket to the front handlebars?
Depending on the 'bent of choice... they make under-seat frames and bags too.

If it was me, I would try to get the batteries low and off the back. Look into under seat bags for the batteries. It will handle a lot better and the rear is left open for 'stuff'.

I use mine for commuting and groceries. Using a trunk bag and panniers I've loaded 50 pounds on mine. But balancing the load out is critical and having panniers that hang low helps. Underseat steering doesn't permit a handlebar bag, and I mount my headlight battery on the rack - zip tied tight to to the front of it.

I don't think I'm going to have a choice on battery placement. I'm most likely going to get the 36V NiMH that goes with the Bionx kit. They say that it won't mount on the frame and that you have to get a rear rack. Forget the Lithium-Ion. I'm thinking that it may too hazardous for my climate (as well as my risk tolerance when it comes to explosions and fires. When the tech improves in a few years, I'll switch over, but I have to deal with now.)
...So I guess that leaves me with the low-hanging panniers. Is is hard to get the load balanced with those?

It isn't hard. You just have to think it through as you load the panniers. Easier when you buy 2 of something. :) But just think of balancing it as you load and it works out pretty good.
