Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of powdercoaters in the Plano area. Could you recommend any places?

Thanks

I know a good place to find out. Your local Harley Davidson dealer or any custom motorcycle or hot rod shop. Why do I recommend a Harley dealer and the like? Because they do a lot of powder coating in the way of customizing motorcycles and cars. In fact the work is usually contracted out to a local powdercoater. The nearest HD shop to you (Plano) is Harley Davidson of Dallas in Allen. (Click the link below) These guys should recommend a good one. Good Luck.

This is cool news. Heck, I can't even buy the material to do my own spray for that, mush less the time involved in prep.

Anyone interested in getting a group coating? That is if we can agree on a color

I'm up for it if we can agree on a color. I'm a pretty basic kind of guy though.

My original thoughts were either White (prefered) or Navy Blue, but a good deal has very persuasive powers...........

How much would the discount be on a group coating?

The discount would probably be significant as all the frames would be in the same batch and there is really a fixed cost for a batch.

OK, so I will give these guys a call and use the number of frame sets that have replied back as being up for this and get a general price quote after we answer just one question.

Now for the fun part.......What color?

jk80world

I'm interested! I vote for darkish blue or red.

thehappyrobot

white

txvintage

Anyone else with color votes? I was leaning towards white as well, but am still open to other colors for $$$ sake.

Having overcome the stripped crank arm:notamused:, I'm down to a bare frame set and ready to go.

So far we have :

motoko (Orange, but White could work)
thehappyrobot (White)
Greybeard
Rammer
jk80world (Darker Blue or Red)
txvintage (White, but open to new experiences)

Six frames should be a large enough batch to work for us I would think, just the color issue and when remains.

Sorry guys for the slow reply. I have been working here in Houston the past few weeks. No time for bikes. :(

I would ideally like an orange, but if that wasn't an option, white would be cool.

txvintage

Ya know, I was thinking about orange, sort of an old school original Team Motobecane look.

I think we may be alone in this one, lol.

Did anyone get an idea on prices?

Someone mentioned in a post recently about a place in Mesquite that will powdercoat bicycles.

EDIT: http://www.endurocoatings.com/ I think this is the place

Sorry for the late reply. I was out of the country.

I was thinking white too but I could go for red or orange as well.

could a mod possibly change the title of this thread to DFW group powdercoating?

I just called, and for 6 frames, the guy can do it for 60 a frame.

It's looking like white is the dominate common choice.

Another issue is all of us getting the frame sets there at the same time. It's taken a long time to get this far.........

$60/frameset is still $60. Do they do the prep? I mean stripping and priming?

thehappyrobot

what company is this going to be through?

Rammer
08-01-08, 07:00 PM
Here's some images (http://www.powdercoatingit.com/Bicycles.htm) of bicycles powder coated. It shows what some different colors may look like. I can go with just about any color (except maybe the bubble gum pink).

The same place (not a local company) has a decent FAQ that includes this Q&A:

Q. What is included in the price quote?
A. All of our pricing is for the entire job. That would include stripping, bead blasting, phosphate coating, masking critical areas, plugging threaded holes, capping studs, coating, curing and packaging, the only additional cost would be for shipping which is done at cost.

I don't know if this local place being considered has the same Answer. Obviously, shipping would not be needed if using a local company.

It appears that the per frame price is $60 individually or as a group. If that's the case, we can get any color we want.

I've been busy repainting the intereior of the house this week and haven't had time to folow up with them though.

Does anyone have a time frame for this? I would love to get in on it.

I will be heading back to Austin in about two weeks and could drop off a bike (or two) on the way. (if colors matter, I'll vote for white or a nice candy blue.

I'm all for the sooner the better. My bike is stripped down and useless right now

motoko
08-03-08, 09:45 AM
I am all for sooner than later too.

Could someone call around on Monday (tomorrow) and see what different places will do in the way of prices, given we will have 6 frames or so. I didn't check with Enduro if that price included blasting and prep.

If anyone in the Plano area who could help me strip my bike down. I haven't got any of the tools. but all that needs removing is the forks, headset, cranks and BB. Only tools I really have are hex-keys and a 15mm wrench!

Hey guys, you might want to read some of this thread about powdercoating. There is one place around town that I would avoid. The "crime scene photos" are at the end of the blog. The original post starts at topic #5

Interesting read. My old road frame that I had coated at a place that does a lot of bikes has the same thing. In my opinion it is a problem with the frame, possibly internal rusting or something.

When you say a place in town to avoid, where do you mean?

Have you guys seen the Retro-reflective coatings by these guys? http://halocoatings.com/Trade_Mag_Article.pdf (http://halocoatings.com/Trade_Mag_Article.pdf) How cool would it be to have a black bike that would reflect as bright white at night?

Leaving for college this weekend, so I'm taking my frame down to Enduro today, they will have it ready for Friday. It is gonna be $60 for sand and powder.

txvintage
08-13-08, 02:03 PM
Well, that pretty much confirms that either as a group, or individually, it's $60. It looks like what ever color you want is a go in that case.

Hopefully Motoko can give us an update on Friday about how it turns out.

The guys there seem to know what they are doing. When I was there a guy was collecting from them what I think is his 3rd BMX to be powdered.

They have a really big paint selections, so you will be able to get anything that you want, and with any finish!

Great! I was hoping for good news.

Please post a pic of your finished product if you get the chance before you head back across the pond. What color did you end up going with?

Sorry for the delay. I had to pack up for college, and didn't have much time to post a review.

Overall I am really pleased with the final job.

I took it in on a Wednesday and got it back Friday. I took it home and when reinstalling the forks I noticed a orange flake on the floor. A flake fell off the fork. Underneath I saw the original silver paint. They had never sandblasted the frame. You could tell, because the powdercoat was gasified (had little bubbles).

I called back Saturday morning, and spoke to the boss, he apologized, and thought it would have held better without blasting. I took it back in later that day and they completely re-did it and blasted it this time. The quality after the second time was fantastic. He through in a free clear coat too.

Even with the problem I experienced, I would still highly recommend Enduro and will take a frame back there in the future. For $60 it was a bargin and they have a fantastic range of colors.

Here are some snaps.

Thanks for the update.

The frame I will be taking in will most definitely need to be blasted, so that shouldn't need to be an area of concern, lol.

I like how the orange ended up, looks nice.

Did you have them plug the bb and head and seat tubes or did you ream and chase them yourself?

My bike is heading over there today for a pearl paint job. Only thing is, it's going to be $75. Not really sure why it's 15 dollars more, but I didn't want to throw a huge fuss since it's only fifteen dollars..
I'll let you guys know how it turns out though!

Update: $15 more because it's pearl instead of regular color. It looks great! I'll post some pictures tomorrow. My bike is already assembled but you can still check out the job.
