I'm looking for actual roads that are good for cycling in southern maine. I want to put together a few different 50 yard rides exploring diff. areas in S.ME. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Here are a few resources:
The Eastern Trail (http://www.easterntrail.org/) is a 70ish mile mostly over-the-road route that goes from the Rt 1 Memorial Bridge in Kittery to the Bug Lighthouse in South Portland. Up in Scarborough and South Portland it actually goes over paved bike paths. The Eastern Trail is part of the East Coast Greenway.

The "Explore Maine by Bike" (http://www.exploremaine.org/bike/bt_southern_coast.html) page of the Maine.gov website has several bike routes throughout the state, including 2 in southern Maine.

Thanks! I did check out the main gov site and it looks good. I was just wondering if any maine people were on here who had actual experience on those roads.

My rides tend to be York/Kittery/Eliot/South Berwick in Maine. Although I live in Maine, most of my non-commuting rides are in NH.

Yes.

Did you mean 50 mile rides? If you go up Rte 160 and then Center Conway Rd (nice little town to take a break and have a cup) to Center Conway. Then down 153
to Andrews Hill RD thru Freedom NH. That will eventually bring you back to 25.
That's 50 miles.

Rte 88 > Tuttle > Blackstrap is not long, but nice.

The Lighthouse Loop is very good.

There are a lot of nice rural roads around Augusta.

Thanks! I'll check out that book if I can find it. :)

I might have some more suggestions of you could narrow down where and how far.
Not much point in talking about the Camden area if you are going to ride around Kittery...

Just hop the link, you can get it used through Amazon. I have gotten dozens of used (and new) books through Amazon and love it. Which reminds me, it's time to
order a book.

What I'm looking for:
1. Mostly around the Ogunquit area.
2. Looking to do three types of rides: 50-miler, hilly 50-miler, 10-15 mile TT's

So far, the only real climb I've found within distance of Ogunquit is Mt. Agamenticus. And the only road I've found that has close to no stops for the TT is route 1. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks. :)

Crum Bike shop has a hilly ride that is long
http://www.crumcycles.net/road.htm

I went to college in Springvale, lots of nice country roads in the area.

I stay away from the coast down there this time of year.

If you want a climb, drive up to the Kancamangus Highway center, park and ride to the height of land. Alternatively, you can park in North Conway and do the Mt Washington Loop. The Bear Notch Loop is also fun, about 40 with the climb to Bear Notch keeping it Aerobic (Conway area).

If you devise a neat ride, let me know about it. The 160/153 ride was my idea.

The Mt Washington Loop goes Hurricane Mtn Rd/113/2/16 It is one tough ride and beyond my ability.

Funny I should stumble across this. Please let us know what routes you choose. I will be heading to Moody beach, around Ogunquit, in August so will be eager to hear what routes you liked the best. I am still trying to decide if it is worth bringing the bike or taking the week off entirely.

I would love to ride the mountains out around Mt. Washington but I don't think I'd have the time to drive there and do a 3 hour ride and then drive back. Even conway's too far. It'd be 2 hours round trip driving and I really only have about 3-3.5 hours of available time, so I want to spend as much of it riding as I can. Too bad. :(

I finished riding in southern maine and it was amazing. One of the routes I put together was the most beautiful ride I've ever done -- it went along the coast for about 40% of the ride. Early in the morning, the water crashing against the rocks, the sun glinting off the water, no cars - wow. Also rode Mt. Agamenticus a few times (1 mile long, avg gradient according to the LBS is 14%, according to my GPS is 12% but still steep).

If anyone's interested, I'll see what I can do about putting the routes online here.
