I'm 230Lbs and i want to replace the Mavic aksiums on my road bike, they have been riding fine, but i'm worried about the repocussions if one fails at speed.
I have a carbon frame with Dura ace groupset (Not needed, but i wanted nice gear)
I have a 28 hole DA front hub 7800 (I know i should have gone for 32/36, but this was priced right, and i figure should be better than the 20 spoke front wheel it's replacing), and i'm yet to purchase the rear, it will either be 32 or 36 hole.

At my weight will a 32 hole be ok? or should i go 36 hole rear?
I'm todding up between DT swiss RR1.1 double eyelet rims, or Mavic open pro's-which is better?
Spoke wise, should i go a DT alpine III or Sapim race?
I was thinking 2 or 3 cross front, and 3 or 4 cross rear.

Any other help would be appreciated.

I don't look for light wheel so I go with Deep V's. I use a 28 hole on the front with no problems. I built it back in 05, have about 13,000 miles on it. But hat's a V and most riders are looking for lite cool stuff!:D

I bet you'd be fine with a CXP33 in a 28 hole (3X) .........I'm anywhere from 220 -245 with no problems.

BTW, only reason I went 28 was that I had the hub handy:p

I'd go DTSwiss for rims. I hate OP's. They are noisey (inside seam weld bead) and the eyelts pop out on me. Haven't had a handbuilt set last over 10 months, different builders (not me:D).

CXP33 rims are the ones to get. They survived me. Colorado Cyclist has a good price.

I won't tell you what you should do, but this is what I am running:

Front: 32h OpenPro laced 3x with DT Competition Spokes (2.0/1.8/2.0).
Rear: 36h OpenPro laced 3x on the drive side with DT Competition Spokes (2.0/1.8/2.0) and 2x on the non-drive side with DT Revolution Spokes (2.0/1.5/2.0). Drive side spokes are ~140kgf.

EDIT- w/brass nipples.

Today's rims, spokes and hubs are pretty darn sturdy. I'm 345 and running the stock 32-hole rims and hubs with no issue. Granted, I'm only pushing just under 30 miles so far, regardless, if properly trued and adjusted, the stock will work just fine for you.

I have both wheelsets, the RR1.1 have a slight edge on overall stiffness. The open pro has been a standard for so long, durability is never a question..

The Deep V's and the DT Swiss RR 1.2's are both a step above the open pro and 1.1's for overall stiffness, which is a necessity for clydes.. You add about 100-150 grams per rim in weight.

If you are going 28/32, I would look at the DT 1.1 if lighter is what you are looking for. Otherwise the Deep V's or RR 1.2.. The Deep V's also come in many colors if that may be a preference.

The Deep V is the only wheel where I have broken a spoke and the rim barely came out of true.
