I've been mountain biking almost all my life but I'd like to get into road biking. I found this bike on wbay and was wondering is anyone knows anything about it.

I'd keep looking.

I'm not big on "classics" or "unique fixer uppers" if I want a bike to ride.

Besides it may be a hard one to get replacement parts for and could end up costing more than a new entry level road bike after you buy components to make it"road worthy".

If that's a 58 I'll eat my shirt. Just look at the size of the head tube and how much of it is exposed between the top tube and the down tube.

The message from other "first time buyer" posts should be that fit is everything. unfortunately, you would have no sense of how well this bike fits you prior to purchase. Many LBS' have old bikes for sale. Ask yours.

Davek,

Nope, I'd pass on this one. Puch is an Austrian marque,
the lower end of Austro Daimler, its not italian made.
Mid level components at best.
I think you can do much better for the money.

Fuji Ace is a decent 1st bike, think it comes with 700x28 tires, fender and rack mounts, chromo, all for less than 500 bucks.

specs:

Ace riders like to sit up, so an Ace has a shorter top tube than a Finest. Ace riders like lots of stability designed into their bike's handling, so an Ace has a more relaxed steering angle and a longer wheelbase than a Finest. An Ace is a confidence-inspiring handler.

Ace's frame and fork are made of Cro-moly steel. Parts are mostly Shimano Sora, seven rear cogs and three chainrings: 21 gears, all shifted from the bars. You can easily install two bottle cages and a rear rack and/or fenders on an Ace.

Ace will blissfully drift from inn to inn in Vermont in September. It will be a worthy partner on your first or fiftieth century or club ride. Ace will be good company on one of those cross-state rides like RAGBRAI...

I wouldn't bid. GO for a Trek 1000 or other make for a first time road bike.

Good decision. I go to another website in St. Louis called stlbiking.com where people sell their used bikes. Most of them seem to be into racing.
