My G/F and I will be riding in the North Fork Century on August 24th. We will most likely be doing the 66 mile route.
Who's in?

That sounds like a cool ride...starts and ends in Greenport, and we can go fishing there too!
Would love to do it, but I won't be in town. Save me a cue sheet, please?

I'm probably going to do the 100 for this one. Never did any riding on the north fork of LI before.
This is a nice ride. I managed to get in the first 40 miles before the weather got the better of me two years ago. Small hills , great scenery, Long Island wine country. Glenn bases it out of Greenport High School so there are real showers instead of those portable things he uses for Montauk.
Oh yeah, and when it rained, Glenn and the volunteers were nice enough to move our bags to a dry location :p

I like this...Anthony won't have to piece it back together after a bad transport. Part of me wants to see if we can crash at my old stomping grounds on Shelter Island. What time is the last ferry from Greenport?

Look us up when you get there; Henri will be the one riding a paceline that's 4 mph ahead of anyone else :p that is until I catch him with a random burst of speed :D

Thanks for the [shower] heads up, Stacy. I actually was just happy to have any shower at all after the Montauk ride. I haven't been to Greenport in 20 years; trying to remember where the H.S. is. I do remember where the Shelter Island Ferry is, though. I spent many a time driving like mad to make the last ferry...are you planning on this ride?

I haven't made up my mind yet. I spend a lot of money in the past few weeks and I don't want to wind up fueling my ride with ramen :p

You seem to have good info on different rides.
Have you ever done the Gold Coast in Long Island?

Thanks! I'm not sure if I can keep up just yet. I'm still relatively new to biking as this is my first full season of riding.

No I've only read about it on the web. According to the site it's accessible via the LIRR which is a real plus for us city slickers :p

Frankie, I did this tour in 1993 with some friends and the 55 mile route (which they had at the time) was challenging but do-able for me at that time. I tried again in 1994 and could only manage about ten miles before I finally left my bike with a homeowner and took a taxi back to the car.
The hills were very intense (for me) and I never went back for another try. Now that I am back into the biking thing, I may try to complete this ride again (since it is one of only two rides that I quit in the middle of) but I wont be doing it this year since I am registered for several other rides already.

Congrats on finishing the Montauk ride.
I really enjoyed the Harbor's Ride last weekend in the same area.
I may give the Gold Coast a shot next weekend.
Have a good 4th!

Didn't know it was Glen's ride, but it's a cheapie...$20 or $25 day of ride.
I'll do either the Gold Coast or Harlem Valley.
Harlem valley kicked my a** last year.
I may go back to see how I fare this time around.

I think Lucky07 meant the Northfork Century, which is one of Glenn's rides. Current cost is just about $100 including transportation from Manhattan.. a bit cheaper if you can get there on your own.
Between getting caught in a thunder storm two years ago, and reading about what happened with the Montauk rides, I also have doubts about spending $100 or more, in advance, for any of these rides.

Good luck if you do the Gold Coast Tour, I found it to be difficult when I tried it 14 years ago.
I am registered for the Harlem Valley ride and the North Fork ride. Will be doing both with my G/F so will only be doing the sixty-somthing mile option in both rides. Maybe I will see you on one of these rides (or both).

Is the North Fork fairly flat?
I've done 75 miles of rolling hils but never 100 of any type of terrain.
If it's flat I'll make this my first.
Definitely NOT flat but not bad either. Sorta like Queens hills or even like the hills in Central Park.

From the website:
The route is flat, Flat, FLAT... no hills at all on the 25- or 66-mile routes; three short but nasty hills on the 100-mile route. (But nothing you would write home about...)

C'mon do the Century. [gotta start working on you and the GF (PG) now]
I'm doing the 100. The North Fork is the first century I ever did, and this will be my third time on it.
With the exception of those hills, it's more or less comparable to the Montauk ride.

That's not gonna happen, Moe. Her only organized ride was the 5-Boro at 42 miles and she doesn't ride alot during the week because of her schedule, so the 100 is out. Were gonna do a few "60 somethings" together (Harlem Valley, Nort Fork, and Sea Gull in Maryland) and if that goes well, we will tackle some 100 milers next year.

Shorter and steeper.

I'm signed up for the century. Anyone want to join me for an "A" pace ride?? I wouldn't worry about the "hills"...I'd worry more about the wind blowing either West or East....
This may be completely stupid, but I'm considering doing it on my Swift.
are you not used to it?
I did the half last year on my swift which had maybe a few hundred miles on it and I LOVED that saddle. Of course, I have loved it from day one. A bit hard on the sit bones unless I am wearing well padded shorts, which I don't for short rides, but definitely did for 50 miles.
I'm still trying to decide whether to do this...I'd be a C or so I think (maybe 12-13 mph average?)

Swift folder, not Swift saddle. 20" wheels.
My reason being, I haven't been on my road bike in months, and I spent all that time making the Swift more suitable. I'm doing 28 miles per commute day on it now, so 100 should be within grasp if I put the skinny tires on it.
Theoretically.
Or not.
Ah - gotcha. Yeah, that'd be a challenge. But if you are doing 28 daily maybe not so difficult.

If you can get comfortable on the Swift, the 100 shouldn't be a problem. I wasn't considering doing this ride, but now I am and I'm wondering if I should ride my fixed gear.

This is a great ride!. I am going to be doing this for the third time this year. However this past Sunday my wife went down hard. Here are the details

http://thelazymarathoner.blogspot.com/2008/08/gory-details.html
She registered for the North Fork, but obviously she wont be riding. Glen (Ride organizer), said that her registration is transferable but not refundable.
So if anyone out there wants to buy her registration please let me know. You can just email me at wtorres@nyc.rr.com Registration is $67. Glen encourages the practice of selling your spot if you cannot make the ride. You can read it yourself on the "how to register" page of the ride site. http://www.bicycleshows.us/
In addition she paid for the round trip bicycle and bus transportation from NYC this is ALSO available. They offered that at $27.
wow - sorry to hear about your wife, hope she is feeling better.
I might be interested - I will try to get my act together on this ride tonight and let you know either way.

This may be completely stupid, but I'm considering doing it on my Swift.
Noteon, I did the North Fork two years ago on a fixie (42/15) and -- despite Glenn beckoning us with Flat, Flat, Flat -- it felt a little bit hillier than Montauk, which I've done twice. The hills on the Montauk are all at the end when you're gritting your teeth and mumbling WTF to yourself; on the North Fork, they're seem to be more of them but they're scattered throughout. But they're still not killers by any means. From what I know of Swifts, including a quick tryout at Peter's open house, it's doable. What is your other option?

THIS is a email from Glen..
Howdy boys and girls,
Glen here, your tour director and humble servant.
You are receiving this email because you are fully signed up and paid up for the Sunday August 24th, 2008 North Fork Century bicycle ride. (That means that if you have friends who THINK that they are signed up, but they didn't get their own copy of this email, they ain't signed up!)
Just a friendly reminder that the price of the ride goes UP rather unreasonably this Thursday at 11:59 p.m. That's not to be mean (being mean is just one of the extra added benefits...) it's because advance registration makes our work easier. Of course the price increase doesn't affect YOU, of course, since you're already registered. But you know that friend of yours who SWEARS that they are going to ride with you, but they haven't registered yet? Yeah...
On line registration is right here:
