Two crits this Sunday. 9:45 am and 1:30 pm.

Is it wise or unwise to drink my usual recovery drink after the first race?

It's Endurox R4 for those that care.

I would, you will be in pain if you don't get some carbs/protein.

Eat and drink.

You'll have time to cool down, change, eat a meal, change, warm up, and race again.

if you try and race twice in a day you might die.

why would it be unwise?

I have read that recovery drinks should not be, err, drunk, before or during competition due to the ingredients.

There is no try. I've done it before and haven't died yet. Just haven't raced twice in a day in two years. But thanks for your concern.

You have something like 3hrs to digest. Just eat some food.

I'd drink my recovery immediately after the race, then eat a small but decent meal right after that.

+1

Drink right after the 1st race.

Bagel with a bit of PB and Banana 20-30 minutes later, FTW.

I'd probably have a gel in the final 15 minutes before the 2nd race, as i warmed up again, but I eat more than most.

Lots of water, too.
Oh, get the legs up!!

Sure! Brats and burgers? :D

I'm going to do the 3's and 1,2,3's two hours apart. It's a little too close for a real meal, but I'll do my recovery drink then maybe a half a sandwich and a cliff bar with HEED. If I had 3.5 hours, I'd eat maybe a whole sandwich and HEED/clif bar.

I coach a team that races twice per day about 10 times per season. There's no risk in drinking that. I agree with the above that you should also eat some real food. It's much better than any of the drinks.

You should also stretch, self-massage, and consider putting your legs in an ice bath for a minute. All of these things maximize your recovery.

Good luck.

i've been doing before most of my races this season. guess that's why i'm a marked man.

Any liquid would absorbed well before your second start. Unless there is beer or booze involved, I wouldn't worry.

though, I have read somewhere that if you race twice in a day you might die.

i believe that was in a book entitled "German Humor."

When you're older, you get to do the Trifecta: Pro-1-2, 35+, 45+

I've only done it a handful of times, and paid the price each time. There's another guy in my area who does it regularly.

I'm eligible for 4 (four!) races for a local July 4th crit - as a 40 something 4.

Hi,

I'm not sure why you would drink a recovery drink after the first race. There's not enough time in a couple of hours for significant muscle regeneration.

IMHO, I would eat /consume / inhale whatever you normally would during a long ride -- PB on a bagel, gel, whatever your body is used to digesting.

As a 50+ Cat 3 I normally do two races a day and on days when I feel my sanity slipping I've tried three. So far this year I've maintained my modicum of sanity and stuck with 2 a day. Hammer Gel, Endurolytes, and Perpetuem have been working for me on multi-race days for the last several years.

I did a quad last year. Was pretty much hanging off the back by the 4th race. No more than 3 races per day from now on.
