just wondering of other peoples experience of using a sram chain with shimano chainrings.

I have been using a PC-49 chain and Deore cranks with the upgraded middle ring to the alloy LX/XT quality. At present I have gone through chainrings as fast as chains. (approx 1000km). The last chain was just showing signs of wear and the cassette is still ok with the new chain, but the chainring had mushroomed the front of the teeth (especially where the shifting ramps make the front of the tooth very thin) and had visible elongation of the 'valley' between teeth. I know of others that have got ~4 years out of chainrings, and the only difference is that I use the sram chain.

I am currently trying a truvative middle ring to see if that makes a difference.

I am using a SRAM 89 chain on my Ultegra rings and love it. The SRAM seems to be of higher quality than Shimano and they have the Power Link which helps in installation and repair. Also for some reason the SRAM chain seems to be quiter than the Ultegra chain I had on there recently.

I'm running a mid quality sram 8 speed chain on 9 speed XT rings and a 8 speed XT cassette. My MTB, which never sees pavement, has over 1100 miles on it's current drivetrain without excessive wear.

The conditions you ride in, the frequency of cleaning & lubing your drivetrain and your choice of chain lube are probably the most critical factors in drivetrain longevity. I normally perform weekly preventative maintainance on my bike, but in some trail conditions I clean and lube my drivetrain after every ride.

I have no problems with SRAM chains and ring worm, I mean ring wear.

Me neither, but I take pills for it.

I've run the SRAM PC-89R on Shimano 105 for 2 years and 6500 miles and now on full Dura Ace with no issues to speak of. I do like the Power Link for chain removal for cleaning.
