Mountain Biking - an idea, for building a MT bike!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I go to places like Wal-Mart and Target offen, and I always see those cheap dual suspension mountain bikes. The parts on those bikes are really cheap, but the frame its self appears very solid.
Right now, I have so many Mt. parts, prolly enough to build a few mountain bikes. All I need is a frame to build off of.
I've been wanting a dual suspension bike for so long, but cant afford one.
Do you guys think I could buy one of those bikes, strip it, and put all my parts on? Again, all I'll be using is the frame and fork.........
Can it be done?

depends on the stroke length etc. Sometimes those bikes don't come with standard size shocks making upgrading very difficult. If that was really your goal I would think looking on ebay for an early (99ish) dually frame would offer the same ride quality, same price, but better standards.

The frames look beefy.....or atleast thats what they want you to think. Those frames are absolute crap, and the suspension components they have will work for only a couple weeks.

Not to mention the fact that the frames probably weigh as much as some of the downhill bikes out now ..

But my question is, will those frames be compadiable will standard bike parts?

Actually, I only get to Mountain bike once a month, at the most.

For the 150- 200 bucks you're going to spend on one of those bikes to upgrade, you should really shop e bay for a bare frame. Just as Maelstrom suggested. You could get a nice full susp. frame for the same money or less. It would be a much better way to go in the long run, because when you were done you would have a bike that is desirable and you could sell it if you had to and get something out of it. If you upgrade a cheap bike all you have is a cheap bike with some nicer stuff on it.
I think you could definitely find a dualie frame on Ebay in your price range.

Also, I couldnt buy anything over the internet even if I wanted to. I dont have that paypal account, I dont have a cradit card, infact I dont even have a bank account. All my money is in cash. :D

no thanx, for many reasons:
-thats frame is to small
-your asking price is to much
-you're selling it for a reason, which means its a POS
-Im not gonna send a complete stranger $400, and hope he or she will mail that frame to my house.

Money orders my friend money orders
Buying from the internet is not a bad thing at all. If you use common sense and take the time to shop a bit you can get some hella deals on stuff. I can't even count the number of frames, wheels, forks...and many other items I have bought from the net. I am not pushing you to buy, just letting you know it can be done safely and easily if you wanted to go that route.
Good luck whatever you decide

I agree with everyone else here. Don't buy a cheap bike to spend big bucks upgrading (you'll find somethings you can't upgrade). It will be more of a headache later. If you are on a tight budget save a little longer, don't rush out and buy something just because you have some spare cash.
But hey its your time and money. You asked people for advise, they gave advise, and you got defensive. You want a wallyworld special...go get one. Just don't say we did not tell you so.

Calling his frame a POS because he wants to SELL it? You are too smart.

Your saying his frame is a POS? Wow.....you are VERY childish.
I didnt say his frame is a POS!
You have no idea what you're buying, unless you see it in real life! If someone shows me a frame on the net, I dont know if its bent cracked, or damaged.
The problem with buying stuff over the web is that so much of the purchase is based on trust.

Maybe you didnt say it was a POS.....but you said that, whatever its supposed to mean.

Thats why you ask for pictures, or anything like that before buying it............
If your that worried about the guy ripping you off you ask for a COD and rip the box open and inspect the frame before paying the delievery guy. Or even ask the guy to send the frame first which he will most likely do. The problem is with the people that dont trust others.

Bitter eh? Not everyone is selling a POS. I sell bikes for the purpose of upgrading. They aren't in bad shape just not useful to me anymore. That was an entry level freeride style bike. Maybe he realized it wasn't big enough for him. Or maybe too big (travel) for him. He was making you an offer to be friendly...return the favour and simply say "No thanks"...sheesh
Too small...jesus you must be 6'7 because a 19" dawg fits me fine and I am a long legged 6'5 guy.

forget about it...this guy is just cranky, and a very NON trusting person. I think he has some issues about proper etiquette on forums, and dealing with people in general. The world still goes round even though these types are in it.
Life is too short to get upset over this stuff.

My name is Mr Jerk for a reason ROTFLMAO :D
Some people are so damn paranoid of the internet. Buying a Walmart bike and putting good parts on it is about like buying a 500 dollar car and putting 4000 dollar rims and a 3000 dollar stereo in it.
Mr.Jerk, with your last responses you sound like a jerk. A wallmart frame is not the answer to your problems. It only looks beefy.

Ok.
Listen to these guys Mr. Jerk, especially Klein, Maelstrom, and Jim311, and hyperhall. They all know what they are talking about.
Take a look at this site: http://www.bikesrnottoys.com it will open your eyes. You won't get anywhere building up a depot store bike, especially since they are set up for a 1" threaded steerer. Not many companies at all make those components, and good luck finding an used one, if you find one, it will be unrepairable. With getting a frame for sale over the net or a complete bike over the net, you will get a bike that is 1,000 times better than any new depot store bike.

actually, my bike has a 1" threaded head, and I paid $495 for it! :D
You guys made your point, I wont buy a Wal-Mart bike! :D
Have a NICE DAY! :D
