Classic & Vintage - Austro Daimler Ultima--sell whole or piece out?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've got a 21-inch (seat tube) Austro Daimler Ultima (purple) I'm ready to part with. It's got the Super Record everything (titanium, anodized black in places). The wheels aren't original, but are Mavic rims on Campy Record (how do you distinguish Record from Nuovo Record from Super Record hubs?) low-flange hubs.
I'm trying to decide if I'm better off trying to sell this as a complete bike, or piece it out. Individual piece prices seem more reliably consistent on eBay than complete bike prices.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks.
Rick
As someone who appreciates classic bikes, and
collectors I think its better to sell as complete bike.
Sure you can get more for it parted on e-bay but
something gets lost when you part it out.
Check the classified on Campy only and Classic Rendezvous, both do have reputable ads. Just be careful
of the "my shipping agent will pick it up, I'll send you $2,000 dollars will you refund the difference to him" (its
a scam!).

Lotek may curse me for a philistine, but I'd part it out if that bike fell in my lap. Two reasons: one, there's probably something on it I'd want to keep, and two, it sells better on ebay that way. I like ebay because the stuff I can't use isn't hanging around the house for very long.
You will almost definitely get more money by parting it out, but you will risk being stuck with a few parts (or even the frame) unsold. Since the wheelset is not original, consider selling it separately and keeping everything else together.

Hi
I'd be interested in purchasing your AD. Got any Pix? How about some info? Mileage? Blemishes...Crashed?

I am interested in your A-D Ultima if you would like to contact me through bikeforums.

Hi,
I can't reply to you directly because your BikeForums setting says you don't want to receive email. I'm attaching some photos of the bike. You can email me directly for more info at rlbeauh@warpdriveonline.com.
Basically, the bike has the titanium Super Record headset and bottom bracket, Super Record cranks (170 mm) with the small chain ring drilled out, SR brakes and drilled-out levers (levers are not original, one of them has some roadrash from a crash before I got them), SR derailleurs that are partially anodized black. The rear derailleur is the original SR design, just like the earlier(?) Nuovo Record, not like the majority of the newer SR derailleurs you see on Ebay. The seat post is SR, with milled out splines that are anodized black. There are two top pieces on this seat post that hold onto the saddle rails, one of which is titanium and the other is not. The pedals are Super Record anodized black. The wheels did not come with the bike. They have 32 spoke low flange Campagnolo Record hubs (I don't know how to distinguish SR from NR or just Record hubs of that era) and Mavic rims. It has Cinelli Giro d'Italia handlebars and a TTT Record 65-mm stem. At the moment, I have Shimano bar-end shifters on it, but I have the original Campy downtube levers. It has some paint chips on the rear stays, part of one of the bottom bracket cups was scarred by putting the wrong type of wrench on it, and a bike shop recently messed up the Reynolds 531 decal on the seat tube. Otherwise, it is in great shape. I rode it as my main form of transportation in college from 1978-1980, then on very rare occasions (probably less than once a year) until about two years ago, when I resumed riding more regularly. In all, I doubt I have more than 4000 miles on it.
I got the bike back in 1978 from Eugene Sloane (author of The Complete Book
of Bicycling). He was writing a column for Popular Mechanics at the time
and AD gave him the bike in the hopes he'd say nice things about it in his
column. I don't think he ever actually rode it.
Let me know what you think.

Hello:
Can you tell me your price? I, too have a 21" Ultima, although it is not in nearly as good condition as yours. I hope you don't mind my asking.
Thank you
