A member of the new forum, Schwinnbikeforum.com, posted this link to Minneapolis CL, which he felt was a little fishy.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/bik/711838996.html

I'd say! :troll: This was posted in early June.

I found this Super Sport at the dump last July, cleaned it up, and once Sporty was back I started offering it to interested members. I really just wanted to find it a nice home and enough $ to make the time I had in cleaning it worth while.

Last Friday it left NH on a DHL truck for IN where it is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Obviously it is nowhere near MN! :notamused:

On a stack of Bibles I swear this is my side yard!

I'm almost sure I understand what you're getting at. Are you saying somebody copied your photo to list a bike on Minneapolis craigslist?

Exactly.

Flagged as prohibited. Suggest that all do the same.

As for addressing complaints towards the fraud: sale-711838996@craigslist.org.

EDIT: Email link dead. Address your complaints to: 612.327.5644 (Heck, he posted it, he asked for it).

Exactly. So that's what New Hampshire looks like without all that snow. ;)

What was the tipoff that the ad was fishy?

Do you think it's possible that the seller just doesn't have a camera, and found a photo of a similar bike?

my guess would be the fact that his bike was pictured.

That isn't how this courtroom works ;)

No disclaimer about photo origins (not to mention copyright infringement)? Guilty until proven otherwise!

my guess would be the fact that his bike was pictured.Yes, but pastorbob was tipped off by somebody else about it. So somebody else must have recognized the photo as being pastorbob's bike.

Anyway, I'm not sure that it's entirely fraudulent. It may be as simple as someone who is selling the same bike, but doesn't have a camera. Otherwise, unless the potential buyer is long distance, the scam would collapse as soon as a local buyer shows up with cash in hand.

For that reason, I tried to email the seller to see if he was interested in my checking the bike out on Wednesday morning. Email was dead by then. Might be worth it to call and find out if it is available for local viewing though - that should settle the matter quite quickly.

Yeah, but the internets have pretty much proven that a lot of people are idiots.

Hence the intelligent individual's chance for revenge. :saweeet:

I called. Just got "Todd's" voicemail. Left a message and said I would call back, which I did in about 1/2 hour, but he still did not answer (used *67 to block my number). I was going to ask if he had any other pictures he could email me.

Sounds like we need a Minneapolis C&Ver to go take a look at it and report back....

I'm not one to show off my garage door. But how about a white bike in front of an obligatory white snow pile? :notamused:

Basically the Super Sport and this bike had their pictures taken in the same place. The white bike, however is about 10 feet further from the stone wall where you see the ferns growing. :p

Even that's unacceptable in my book, as the bike being sold isn't represented there. It won't be as clean as PB's nor will it have a Brooks sitting on it.

Not to hijack this thread, but has CL always been so scumbag-rampant, or is this an escalating occurrence?

My hunch is that as CL use grows and more and more people get comfortable with it the percent of 'scum' will rise to the top. More usage equals a pool of less savvy internet users to be preyed upon.

What the [mod deleted] do you mean? After all, when [mod deleted] is involved, then [mod deleted] is always an issue - whether [mod deleted] means [mod deleted] to you or not. They pretend [mod deleted] in [mod deleted] of [mod deleted] is [mod deleted], but it’s always the same [mod deleted] with different [mod deleted], and consequently, [mod deleted] is nothing other than poseurism.

I have always had good luck buying things on ebay. Haven't bought anything on Craigslist yet. I also try very hard to describe and photo items I sell as accurately as possible so the buyers are happy with what they get.

I believe most sellers are honest. This is why ebay and craigslist are popular - because the vast majority of sellers are honest.

This thread, however, warns us that not everybody is honest. I wonder if it is a Nigerian scammer who's daytime job is sending out email that says stuff like "Dearest One; I am the wife of former oil magnate Ungambe Zimboya who trajically died in a revolt two years ago. He left $8,000,000 in an account and God willing...." "

Kurt,

Don't respond to him any more. The word he used is something in a million years I would never do and I would never want done to anyone. I was glad the moderators deleted his word.

Rev. Bob.

I've found my pictures being used in eBay auctions by the folks I sold the bikes to. I have politely told them not to use my photos without permission.

For awhile, I pulled all by photos off the interwebs. I was going to watermark them al and repost, but a HD crash and the flipping biz has put that on the back burner.

In this day and age, I think the only thing to do is put watermarks on the photos you post. Once my garage is empty of flippers and it's too crappy to ride, and I restore all my photo's, I intend to do that. Hopefully by around 2015.

Good luck.

Goes without saying - it was the last time I visited that shop too. Not because of him alone either - the shop owner was (or rather, is) an arrogant son of a [mod deleted] ;), and had irritated me enough to that point. His repairman/partner in the business only served as the straw to break the camel's back. Speaking of which, he nearly broke his back tripping backwards over a line of bikes on the floor after backing off - I had immidiately spun around to deliver a punch - ended up missing and got a right-jab on his elbow).

 Heavens, no - there was a mint 1983 Spectrum with full Campagnolo 50th in that lineup (I'm not kidding you on this either. I'd bet it is still there too - shop owner wants a cool $6,000 for it ).

Looking over my wording, I realize that I did not explain right - he almost flipped over the lineup, but stopped short. Came close to plowing right into his own Stingray Spoiler though, which was brand new at the time.

I use CL to buy and to sell. I'm confused. Even if the guy used PastorBob's photo, so what? What's he going to do when someone shows up to buy the bike, tell them give me the money before you see it? Pull out a gun and say "stick 'em up"? It just doesn't make sense.
The only way a scam works on CL is if you ask the seller to ship. I know some people do this, but it is VERY risky, more so than ebay because there are no seller ratings, no feedback review, no paypal protection (no matter how lame it is). CL even has warnings about scams involving forwarding money before you see the item.
Ok, I must have missed something so someone please fill me in. Be gentle.

Roccobike,

The CL seller does not say; :notamused: "A Super Sport like this one pictured, which BTW is someone elses bike. I just happen to have stolen this photo without asking first." :notamused:

The impression is if you showed up at his house you would see that Super Sport, that rock wall, and those ferns. I doubt that can happen in Eden Prairie, MN.

Rock wall in March '06 before the ferns come out: :twitchy:

Rock wall with ferns in a wider picture:

As they might say "I have the pictures to prove the wall is in NH not MN." Case closed! :innocent:
