A story about Abe during the War Between the States (Civil War) goes something like this:
Lincoln promoted a man named Pope to a commanding General. Some warned Lincoln that Pope was a habitual liar.
Lincoln replied, "I knew the Popes. They were all liars and braggarts. But I see no reason why a liar and a braggart would not be a good general."
Reminds me of another AL quote:
QUOTATION: Tell me what brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals.
ATTRIBUTION: Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), U.S. president. quoted in New York Herald (Nov. 26, 1863), attributed.
In reply to comments about Grant’s drinking habits.

If only we still had leaders like we did in those days.

Make it harder to vote, like it was in Lincolns time, and we might.

It would be nice if only those who hold jobs, own business, or own real property could vote.
Anyone living off the efforts of others (welfare) or does not contribute to the tax base should not help decide the course of the nation.

Let us not limit it to welfare. If you don't end up paying taxes, you don't get to vote. We should also include a basic intelligence test, math question, grammer question, leave a quarter sticking out of a light socket, make 'em drive around the block with a cell phone and unlimited minutes, let's see what happens. :D

leave a quarter sticking out of a light socket
Wait a tick...where did you see this quarter?!?

Yeah, I don't know what we were thinking when we ratified the 15th Amendment.
Anyone living off the efforts of others (welfare)
Does that include corporate welfare and farm subsidies?
Being a menber of the Crank Crushing Rednecks racing team I would imagine a few of your teammates wouldn't make the cut, yeah I've been to the south, I've seen Deliverence!

caloso. By harder I mean it required effort to get to a place of polling. You might have to saddle up and ride fourty miles to a county seat, have plans to spend the night and board your horse. Then get up the next day and return home. It does not matter what color or race someone is(The only things that the 15th applies to that matter as someone with a prior state of servitude would have to be over a 140 years old) It matters wether or not you make an intelligent thought out voting choice or are you a fool that voted because your buddy at work or church said to vote that way. yourself :)

(Forgive any inaccuracies: )
Lincoln was surrounded by lobbyists. Some aids noticed his expression and asked what was wrong.
"Too many hogs and not enough tits."

Hmm, I've arrived on this thread late. I think some posts are missing. But to answer that question, as a member of the Crank Crushing Rednecks, we were all employed full time, Samdabikinman, is a full time domestic engineer :D who works part time making custom made bumpers....the rest were..physician,mechanical engineer, plumber, two managers, a laboratory sales rep, and others that I can't recollect their exact job description
Don't confuse Libertarian political views with "The South". Considering Atlanta has the distinction of harboring the most amount of upper middle class African Americans in America and labelled the place for an African American to succeed, it is no longer "Deliverance". A prominent monument to John Wesley Dobbs, the godfather of Black business in Atlanta, also testifies that "Sweet" Auburn Avenue, is home to one of the nation's oldest sustained Black business districts. It is anchored by the second largest Black life insurance company and one of the largest Black banks.
No other city, and that include Denver, matches Atlanta University Center (AUC), with its six historically Black colleges and only Howard University can rival AUC for producing the most Black post-graduates.
While some cities celebrate their 1st or 2nd Black mayor, Atlanta counts many candidates entering the race every electoral year to become the next strong Black mayor. In other words, don't paint us with a Hollywood's rendition of what the South is. I have seen my share of Hill billys up in the mountains of New England, especially Vermont and New Hampshire as well as Colorado. These guys make the Deliverance yahoos look like sophisticated erudites. It has its problems, but it also has greatness that many from the North do not see (I'm an exNew Yorker)
With that said, not enough Americans get out and vote, so any restrictions would be silly. This policy would discriminate against gay couples where one is a full time domestic partner and is not legally married to their same sex "spouse". Not to mention those who work full time "off the books"....single moms who are waitresses living off their tips and not necessarily part of the "official" payroll of the restaurant, alot of part time construction workers, landscapers etc. all of whom sweat and toil and deserve to have their voice heard.

Don't take my snarkiness too seriously. I didn't honestly think you were advocating the repeal of the 15th or any other franchise-expanding legislation. But that said, voter participation in this country is only about 50% of the eligible population anyway. Seems to me we've got a fairly self-selecting electorate.
Unless you think that making it harder to vote will actually increase the participation of well-informed voters, like Tom Sawyer and his fence.

Couldn't hurt. Let's only allow, say, women to vote for the next twenty years and see what happens.
