Fifty Plus (50+) - Hello everyone

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello all... I just sarted riding very recently, mainly to get some much needed excercise at age 66. And wow, I'm absolutlely loving it!!! I quit smoking 81 days ago and as a reward, I went to a bike shop and bought a bike... It's a Raleigh Detour 4.0 sans training wheels. Thought I'd just ride around the street here, but find myself out on the roads, geared way down on hills, and having a blast.
We have the Erie canal towpath not too far away, and some trails in the parks around Peninsula that I'm excited about trying...Been out on the back roads around here and although I'm Kinda slow (8 mph) I find it fun to see things differently and have the wind in my face, at least downhill!!!
Finally reached a 12 mile ride yestarday and really felt pretty good about it...a fair amout of uphill in that ride (not very flat here). Going to try and duplicate that day after tomarrow on a towpath... looking forward to that.. So much info on this site and so much to learn. Raised my seat so my legs are fairly straight and finding it easier to pedal... well enough of a ramble... just wanted to say hi.
Welcome, and good for you. You are going to love being a nonsmoker.
Food tastes better, you will see better, and even whoopy is better.

Welcome ohioed! And what late said- I quit in '81, and I can assure you that it gets better and better with every nicotine-free day. Ride on!
Welcome and congratulations for quitting smoking. There's lots of good information tossed around here, along with a generous portion of humor and plain old BS.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, there will always be someone who can answer them.

Congrats on quitting smoking, too!
I've done a few miles on the towpath near Peninsula. It's a great place to ride. I hope to get back to that part of Ohio to ride it again.
Welcome. Stick around -- this is a great forum.

Welcome to the forum. One of the unannounced advantages of quitting smoking is that you now have some disposable income to spend on toys.......................This is a powerful reward for doing and sticking to something difficult. You deserve it, so enjoy.
You will also notice that over the next 6 to 12 months your metabolism is going to change a little...............yes this is what leads to the dreaded weight gain.................the bike is a fun way to get in a little exercise without realizing how hard it is. Go for rides to look at new things and to try new places. Have fun.
You must live in my neck of the woods.
I'll see you out on the trails. Good luck!:thumb:

Congrats on going smoke free and turning your life around...it's never too late. Now take all that money that you'd normally spend on cigarettes each day and put it away. Someday you'll be an old geezer and ready to retire, and look at the nest egg you'll have!

Hello there. I just started riding also and will be 66 in December. Just started yesterday as a matter of fact. So other than just keeping up right at this time I know little and am having fun learning.

As a Buckeye expat, it's always good to have another person to join the Ghoulardi, Big Chuck and Hoolihan fan club. Sending out a big O...H... your way.
Welcome and keep pedaling!! There is so much to explore out there on your bike.

Welcome to the the forum. Don't be afraid to ask any bike related questions. We may give you smart a**ed answer but, we all asked the same questions when we started out. Where in NE Ohio are you at? I might see you on the road sometime.

I commute to/from work, and have a fairly long ride (15 miles each way). One day last week, as the work day was coming to an end, a big thunderstorm rolled in, and I was not looking forward to my ride home. I got on the bike, found that I had a 25mph tail wind (that never happens), and I had more fun splashing through the puddles while flying home. I got home, soaking wet, with the biggest grin on my face - definitely felt like a kid again!

Quitting smoking + regular exercise = natural Viagra.
Enjoy the ride.
Congratulation on stopping smoking. It took me about a 1000 times before I made it myself. Anyway welcome to the forum and have fun riding.

Trading habits, eh? Cigarettes for bicycles. Well, bicycles are better. As you can see you are not alone in making the switch. If you need to vent, I bet there will be others who have been there and can help you through. Welcome.
ohioed, nice to meet you and congrats on the quitting smoking. Cycling does help keep yopu from wanting to start again.
