I'm taking a job at UTPA in Edinburg and I need to grab an apartment ASAP. If you had the choice, where would you live? I'm thinking I'd like to live north of downtown McAllen which seems to be the cultural center in that area. Any thoughts?

oy. the short answer: nowhere. stay where you are. the not quite as short answer: i think you have it about right, but keep in mind 'cultural center' in mcallen means a slightly higher bar/church ratio. you may be better off snaggin' a place a bit further north, around trenton possiblly - especially if you intend on commuting by bike. east of 10th would also be a good idea, as there are few bike lanes (last i checked) between it and mcoll. youve probably heard it before, but it gets pretty @%^@ing hot in the valley, so get ready for some intense heat-stroke goodness!

Well, I'm living up north in College Station right now. It's way too hot for me up here. I basically stay indoors during the summer. I'll pick up the bike again in August.
But yeah, I'm looking for a higher bar to church ratio and I don't think I want to live amongst my students in Edinburg. Just looking for bars, coffeeshops etc. within walking distance. My general impression is that McAllen > Pharr in this regard.
Thanks for your insight.
I have a tech that lives in Edinburg and I asked him this question. He prefers Edinburg but could live in Mcallen and said to stay away from Pharr, crime is too high.
Personally Mcallen gets too much traffic for me to want to live in the city, I would probably choose Edinburg myself or at least live on the edge off town, somewhere North of 83.

Thanks man, my friend said the same thing. He has always lived on Nolana, west of the freeway.
I guess I'll have to get on my horse and make my way down there in the next week or so. I've been through that area but there is no single place that stands out as the place where I want to live.

Got a place a few blocks from Downtown McAllen. I guess I will suffer the commute but I think I will enjoy the location. Thanks!
