Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, what is the cat-O-meter? Is that the category that you're in or aspire to be in next, or aspire to get into eventually?
If I'm a newly minted cat 4, do I have my cat-4-meter set at 100%, my cat-3-meter at 0%, or I want to be a cat 3, so does making me a cat 4 now make my cat-3-meter at 50%.
The only category I can foresee coming for sure is the 35+ category, and frankly, that's coming way too fast.
they're right up there with the OCP crest.

With some notable exceptions I always looked at the OCP Crest as a DOOOuche-a-meter.

Cool-o-meter clearly in the 86% range.
It's a status symbol, that way people know what cat you are and can judge your comments accordingly.
It is the internet equivalent of a "wife beater".

:roflmao2:
And to answer the OP. If you are a new 4, then your meter would be 0%. Once you reach say 10 points, then your meter would be 50% because you are halfway to a Cat 3

I look at it as away of putting yourself on the line.
When you state where you are, and your progress to the next step, it creates some accountability that helps motivation.
Similar to telling your friend you're going to loose 20lbs, quit drinking, etc.
If you tell someone your goal you're more likely to achieve the goal than if you keep it to yourself.
Either that or its a completely self absorbed narcissistic exercise about which no one gives a rat's ass.

I think Vinokurtof (now Racer Ex) started it with his Cat 2 O-meter.
Like someone else said, the percentage is the (points you have/points needed to upgrade to the next category x 100).
I don't know what you guys consider the old-o-meter, but my 40+ O-meter is at 98% :D

Oh yeah?
So, the plateau started when I went on a business trip. Then, every week after that, I something seemed to keep me off the bike one or two days each week, so the volume was lower. I still won a couple races in there, so the plateau wasn't all bad. The drop at the end if from the vacation I'm coming back from. Looking forward to some fun building again :)

What are the parameters?
10% for every BS "real life" issue that keeps you off your training. Examples; Kids, unsupportive spouse, demanding job, travel, ect. Bonus points for gray hair (5%), overweight (5% for every 10lbs over racing weight), addictions (eg Beer). I'll think up more later, my memory and concentration aren't all that good anymore.

Add 5% for every 5 years over 40. And I keep it low, cause I got guys on my club in their late 50's and early 60's that can kick my sorry butt at will.
Kids - Nope (no kids)
Unsportive Spouse - Nope. (Mine is totally cool with it.)
Demanding Job - Check (but it doesnt keep me off the bike)
Travel - Nope
Gray hair - Check (But I got a full head of it, so I got that going for me)
Bad Knee - Check (high school soccer)
Overweight - Check (28 over optimum racing weight)
Addictions - Check (a beer a day, at least! Wife works for Dreyers Ice Cream. Coffee)
Low Testosterone - Check
Low VO2 - Check
Low Hemocrit - Check
No extra funds for Zipps- Check
I got 50% for my Old O Meter
