I'm looking for a short reach brake caliper that is not internally nutted.
I've pretty much eliminated anything new and the old weinmanns that are so common will not work because they are too long reach. Does anyone know of some old and hopefully common (cheap, accessible), that would have the required reach?
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "internally nutted" but I have a set NOS Modolo Aero calipers that are really short reach; definitely less than "medium" 45mm.

From Sheldon:
Most modern calipers are designed for "recessed" mounting (5 mm Allen nuts.)
Many older frames/forks were designed for the older system with longer mopunting bolts and exposed nuts (9-10 mm wrench.)
Thanks.

I am pretty sure Shimano 300 Exage came in a 39-49mm reach in both internal 5mm and (more importantly for you) the external 10mm nut.
There are heaps of these being thrown away on old bikes here in Australia so you should be able to source some!
Is a Weinmann 500 sidepull too long in the reach? I think I still have a front one in the ol' bone pile.

Yep, the classic sidepulls and centerpulls are both just barely too long.
Also, thanks to everyone for their leads, I think i might be taken care of though.
Have you tried filing the Weinmann 500's so that you can move the pad up that last little bit? Assuming of course its realllllly close already that is
