I'm stunned--I had FedEx ship my Univega Gran Record out to Seattle for me from Boston. What they delivered was a box of catalogs for a lighting company, with my shipping label on it. Has this ever happened to anyone else here? FedEx says they're looking for it, but I'm not too confident about seeing it again...
Anyone in the greater Seattle area have a 54-56 cm sport tourer they want me to take off their hands? (Seriously. I was supposed to ride this 200 miles next weekend.)

Sorry to hear about your bike missing ala FedEx. I've had specialty tools disappear with FedEx and heard of other items disappearing. The catalogs you got were probably for the person who actually got your bike by accident. The trick is to make FedEx pinpoint where the crossup in transfer took place. Make them do it! They have the means. If you stay on them non stop, they will tell you. The fact is, it happens more frequently than most think. Be sure to file a claim and DO NOT let them off of the hook. I hope you get a suitable bike for the ride in time.

What you describe happening is why I avoid using their convenient resealable pouches. I have an account and print my own labels. Then they are taped over when placed on the box.
I am curious as to how FedEx reacted when you contacted them. I know you said they are looking.

I was a package handler for FedEx Ground last summer. I don't know about theft, but in the facility I worked in you'd be appalled at the amount of merchandise that gets damaged.
I can tell you that when a package enters a new truck (i.e. pick-up van to trailer, trailer to another trailer, etc.) it is scanned. In theory every package is scanned, in reality it's around 97%. They should be able to track your package through the system and see where it went "missing". They have the technology, don't stop harassing them till they do it.
Hope this helps

I take this to mean I was not clear when I said I taped the labels over. They are taped over with clear tape. FedEx sometimes complains they have trouble scanning them, but it does protect the label from wet and easy damage.

Nader,
Thanks, but since the wrong package was delivered with my label attached, I don't know if they'll be able to do any tracking...

Given that he had his label on a box of catalogs, I'd bet there's a good chance the label for the box of catalogs is on his bike box.
See if either (a) Fed Ex can tell you if they delivered a package to the company that was waiting for catalogs, or (b) if the company itself can tell you if they got a bike (and hope that some employee didn't take it home).

I made the mistake of not watching the label be applied once and only once. Now I insist on watching the label application. As bad as Fed Ex and UPS are, they are way better than DHL in my experience. DHL was charged with delivering expensive medication for my wife. Three times they delivered to the wrong address and we live in an easy to find, neighborhood. Then DHL denied any error.
I've had enough of private label and now use USPS. So far, they seem to be able to deliver to the right location, if not timely, at least they are accurate.
