Foo - *******s on the sidewalk...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I wonder when these morons will learn that BICYCLES BELONG ON THE STREET...NOT the sidewalk.
THEY'RE a good part of the reason that motorists honk at my ass when I'm riding in traffic...as I should be.

And when they are not on the sidewalk these same morons are riding on the wrong side of the street. Last week I saw this woman transition from the sidewalk, cross the street and ride against the flow of traffic into me! There was heavy traffic too and she seemed oblivious even though I was only 20 feet away. As I passed I yelled "You're going the wrong WAY!"

if this had had anything to do with a bike...I would've gotten it instantaneously.
but alas, it did not...and it took seconds of pondering and REpondering for my intellect to grasp a thread of the concept you wished to convey.
I don't ride a horse, pal...if THATS what you're insinuating. :innocent:

Welcome to the internet, it's quite warm here.
I'm with you on the bike lane parkers.. that really grinds my gears.. the sidewalk riders.. eh.. if it makes them feel safer, it doesn't hurt me. It's legal in L.A. I feel safer on the road myself.
well, if your city installs "no bikes on sidewalks" road signs like we have here in etobicoke....

Start packing heat and shoot everyone that pisses you off. That should take care of the issue quickly. Meaning that all the whiners will be locked up.
That is unless you can post from prison. Then I need to adjust my plan.
This is exactly why I jaywalk as often as possible. I'm hoping the idiot cyclists will learn by example! Sheesh

I think this is worse! This makes a lot of people think they're not supposed to ride their bike outside of their neighborhood. So many people don't realize they're supposed to ride on the street, they think it's dangerous.
What we need is an education program: TV advertisements which say "Statistically, it's significantly safer to ride in a busy street rather than a sidewalk on the same street. This is due to crossings such as side streets and commercial driveways where drivers often fail to see a quick moving bicycle approaching because it's on the sidewalk and therefore outside of their area of concern."
But who do you get to pay for something so expensive? I don't think the popularity of cycling is rising fast enough, nationally, to make a case for the fed to pay for it. It might be time for some cities to try it.

I've started riding on the sidewalk just to spite would be BF members. I intentionally put my head down everytime I pass someone, too, or what's worse, I'll sometimes wave at people in cars when a cyclist passes me!

You do understand this is a bike forum with folks from all sorts of backgrounds and opinions right? You basically called out any one who rides on a sidewalk..expect some flack.
Not everyone riding on the sidewalk zips through intersections or buzzes by peds.
In some places the law for bikes is so ambiguous that it could be read that bikes do in-fact belong on the sidewalk...I vaguely remember reading something in the Alabama code along the lines that if there is a path next to the road than cyclists must use it. Path could very well be interpreted as sidewalk.
A: Legal here when there is not a bike lane and my route to work has next to zero foot traffic. If I pass two people on foot a week it is amazing. There is also lots of places where only one side of the street has a sidewalk here.
B: Self preservation is always the first rule in my Book. 'In some spots the side walk is a 100 times safer then the road at rush hour. There are lanes joining to the right where people exit the hwy. They do not have a light or sign. They exit at 60mph bumper to bumper and then try to jump three lanes to make a left. LOTS of wrecks right across the bike lane there. Rode it threes time and almost got hit twice. I'm on the other side of road on the side walk till I clear that cross street.
I have a good half mile of grade at a time and despite the speed limit being 45 people often run 60mph through it (really nice slalom that I too am guilty of zipping through it) and crash often. I peddle my happy ass up the hill at 5mph on the side walk. So would you like me out of the way in heavy traffic when I am going slow or to make you jump out in traffic in front of some ding bat on a cell phone to keep from loosing your momentum?
C: City with lots of foot traffic I totally agree with you. Bikes mixing with Peds is bad. Street is safer overall.
D: :p
Principle is all fine and dandy till you are a Quad or dead.

FWIW, I agree with you. It makes me sad when I see:
people at night with absolutely no lights
people at night with a light so dim I can only see it because I'm looking for it (saw this yesterday)
people riding on the wrong side of the road
people riding on the sidewalk
They are making their own lives more dangerous simple because they could not be bothered to do a little reading (and spending $5 on ultra-bright LED blinkers) before taking their bicycle outside.
Mostly, I'm tired of people telling me that cycling is too dangerous. Whenever I hear of someone getting injured, it's because they were running a red light or driving on the wrong side of the road. No **** you're going to die when you do that.

I love this forum..............the diversity of its members is what makes it enjoyable to be here. You have an opinion but remember its your opinion and you posted it on a public forum, so there's no reason to get pissed off. The bright side of sidewalk commuters is they are on a bike. I don't use the sidewalk but if someone feels safer on them then so be it. Also I doubt they are part of the reason you get honked at...........thats part of being on the road. just my .02 and yes its an opinion.

Better tell those elementary kids to get on the street too. :)
Actually I don't think that the sidewalk is a good thing for elementary kids (if its not good for you why them?). All my accidents in my life happened when I was In elementary school riding in the sidewalk like my parents told me to.
-I got ran over once by a vehicle coming out of a parking lot.
-I hit a car coming out of a repair place, hit my nutz rather hard on the stem and landed on the other side of the car.
-got hit by a car making a right turn while I was crossing the street from the sidewalk. (This one didn't damage me really except for some road rash)
I think kids need more training than anyone, a skill training course, and then a traffic course with an experienced cyclist for a number of hours.
Being scared and ignorant (like my parents) is no excuse to throw a kid in a dangerous situation.

Actually I promote Respect of others, and I'm sorry if you feel I'm beneath you, you have to start somewhere, and for many its done in baby steps. So......do you trash those who don't know how to do it.........or do you try to teach, and help them? The way I see it if your not trying to help, then you're part of the problem.
And if I have learned one thing about the way things run around here is "If you act like an ***hole, you get treated like an ***hole".
I ride on the sidewalk if I'm riding with my kids. I feel they are safer there, as they don't always pedal in a straight line when they are on the road. :) I also ride on the sidewalk if I'm taking my dog with me, as she is very scared of the exhaust end of cars, but has no fear of the business end of them and has been known to want to turn right in front of them. :injured:
When I'm riding by myself I ride on the street.

Haha. I have been thinking about this thread all day. I have been picturing various scenarios of what could go wrong with someone riding on the sidewalk. On a narrow sidewalk yes its not a great idea, but if the sidewalk is 100 feet wide and no one is using it who cares.

Actually, if you look at history, auto companies and oil companies would block any such advertisement that is against their interests. For example, there are organizations that would happily pay large sums of money to advertise the dangers of eating at McDonald's (and fast food in general). No major network will allow it because fast food chains spend way more money than the opposition ever would.
Hope you don't think TV is an accurate representation of real life. It's a business and is all about making money - not biting the hand that feeds them. The news is skewed as well for the same reasons (advertising), but that's another story.
