I am not at all a bike expert, but am now looking to buy bikes for me and my wife. We have a NYC apartment with very little storage space so we are thinking of getting folding bikes. Unfortunately, we are also on a budget, so nothing over $500 will work (and even that makes me cringe a bit). My wife tried a Dahon D8 (with the idea of getting the D7, but they didn't have one available at the store to test ride) and found it hard to adjust to the wobbliness that comes from having small tires (or maybe from the bike hinge, not sure). So, at least for her, we are looking at options for full size wheel folders. What I've seen in the price range is the Dahon Espresso and the Montague DX crossover or CX Comfort. Have not seen many reviews, especially not of the Montagues. Anyone have any experience with them? Are they easy to fold? How compact? How easy to carry? Quality? Also, I've been advised that buying through a local store is a good idea since they provide free tuneups for three years. Can one get Montagues through local stores? Any advice?

Dahon has full size also. I am surprised the bike was wobbly hopefully the hinge was tight. The Downtube 8HN is a great deal right now, it is a 20" but has a 8 speed hub and is light at 24 pounds. Thor has some specials and these are shipped to your door http://www.thorusa.com/dahon/2007/espresso.htm.

I’ve been happily riding a Montague Folder for about a year. Used almost daily for 10 - 40 miles with no problems.

Not the most compact or lightest folder but ‘strong’ enough for me.

Components are ‘stock’ and can be replaced by good LBS. As with all bikes, needs to be kept in adjustment.
