I decided to use a generic cologne I found at Target because I truly like the way it smells. I like the personality a fragrance can give, but when I wore it I got some strange responses. Several of the guys have given me compliments like, "Man, you smell good" and "What cologne is that, it's great". Harmless enough. But women have said in close proximity to me, "What's that smell?!" and "That's too strong". I know how to go easy on the spraying, so the smell I like may be too overpowering for women to enjoy as I do. Also, my sister told me that women are intuitive at knowing if a man wears cheap cologne and I shouldn't wear it anymore and she could shop for my fragrance for me. As much as I am up for finding the one, giving up a fragrance I have used as my signature scent for the longest time would be hurtful for me. What should I do?

Our sense of smell is unique to the individual. Some are more sensitive then others. If someone who is not within arms reach can smell it and immediately know it is you perhaps you are using too much. I work in an industry where all perfumes and scents are absolutely forbidden. My wife is allergic to Patchouli a common ingredient in many scents. People in her office have stopped using it out of consideration. Your sister has made a kind offer but I understand that quality perfumes react differently with different people. Not much use for her to try on a scent you will use.

can't stand the smell of cologne or perfume. Make sure you have deodorant and have taken a shower and your fine.

I think that modern perfumes have gotten entirely out of hand- basically, they stink. They smell extremely "chemical-ly" and unnatural, IMO. A disclaimer- I've been told that I'm a "super taster" (I can pretty much tell you every ingredient in a dish just by tasting it), and I'm also a "super nose" (the kind of people that parfumiers hire to develop new scents. So maybe I'm just more sensitive, but the overtones of nearly every modern perfume/cologne/toilet water are enough to gag (sorry, Pierre and Halston, but that's the facts). I sense that I'm not alone.

Give me a single-note fragrance any day- or at least one of the classics (like L'Heure Bleue). Or better yet, just the subtle scent of a freshly showered body (NOT with those insipid liquid soaps you use with a squeegie kind of thing- Safeguard or Dial are fine).

Some scents don't work with everyone. Just cause it smelled nice in the bottle doesn't mean it's going to work when you get it on. It may have a chemical reaction with your skin oils or if you start sweating. I'm kind of limited in what I can wear, and don't wear cologne too often. I can use bay rum, Clubman, or Canoe aftershave. I can also safely wear Tommy, but rarely do. None of those are very powerful scents to me. Maybe you need to look into getting something more subtle, or the generic thing just isn't working for you.

Just don't wear any cologne at all. The natural smell of a man is much more sexy than smelly alcohol water.

The best colognes for men are chosen by women. Get a female or two to go with you when you are cologne shopping.

Back in high school, I learned that I have horrible taste in fashion. I accept this without a problem. The solution was easy enough.

I would take women whose taste I liked/respected and have them go shopping for me. They'd enjoy it, I would get decent clothes, and I would be dressed in a manner that would attract women that I was attracted to.

Same goes for scents.

I feel the same way about women. If they are healthy, natural smell is sexy as hell.

My favorite is issey miyake (light bottle...dark blue smells like @$$) and others that i like are chanel egoiste platinum and armani acqua di gio. I love the smell of a perfume i like on a woman's neck...yuMmmMmm...I give extra points to girls that smell good.

My personal policy is only showers and deodorant.

I've never worn the stuff. Old Spice works fine enough. About 8 months ago, we were getting ready to go out and my fiend made fun of me because of my t-shirt and jeans attire. He insisted that i'd never get a woman dressed like that. I responded to him that if i needed to dress up to attract a given woman, then she's really not someone i'm interested in. He rolled his eyes and wished me luck.

Eight months later, i love the girl to death ;)

If girls are judging you because they think you're wearing cheap cologne, f 'em... (well, i mean, i guess you wont be. But it really depends on what you're looking for)

Amen. Don't crowd out your pheromones.

Damn skippy, I always thought that colognes and perfumes smelled like urine and candy.
