There is this cat that likes to lay directly in the middle of the bicycle trail I ride on. The first time I saw this cat I thought it was dead from maybe getting run over by a bicycle. I stopped to check on him and was very surprised to see it still alive, but I thought the cat must have been seriously injured because he did not move or even flinch when I rode up on him, but then to my amazement and relief, he stretched out a paw the same way my own cats do to cat some attention. I then give him a gentle nudge to see if he can stand and to further see if he's injured. He then simply stands up and looks perfectly fine, so I coaxed him to the side of the trail away from any danger of being hit by anyone.
I ride off looking back to see this cat just sitting on the side of the trail watching me leave.

Several days later I ride by the same spot, and there he is again, smack in the middle of the road!! I do the same thing again, stop and coax him off the trail, but I'm beginning to see a pattern with this cat now, which I've seen him repeat many times since then. I've also seen him just sitting on the side of the road watching all the cyclists pass him by, and at this same exact location on the trail.

I suspect this cat has his own little extortion racket going on for people to stop and pay his toll with either attention or food. The amazing this is that the cat has absolutely no fear of people passing him by on their bicycles. I suspect this cat may also simply be a cyclist at heart. :D

This is how he looks when approaching on the trail.

This is a shot of how calm and playful he is when approached, and I've learned he is becoming a bit well known now.

By the way, this is on a section of the Pinellas Trail here in Florida.

I think he's severely depressed. His equivalent of laying his head on the railroad track.

What a sassy rascal!

But I wish he'd meet new friends in a safer way...

I'd get off my bike and give him a rub down!

Neat, but I bet someone will purposely run him over some day.

Hey, I heard on the news that there has been some problems on a trail up there in Tampa. Do you have any details on what is happening?

Very sad, but also true about some person harming this cat. I hope and pray it never happens. The problem is that this cat has absolutely no fear whatsoever, and will only move after a lot of coaxing. I always stop and make him move off the road, and I suspect others do as well, but this might be the attention seeking he is hoping for in the first place.

I don't know anything about problems on the Tampa trail, I use the Pinellas trail which is in Pinellas county, I think the trail in Tampa is named the Suncoast Trail.
There are a few other trails down near me and I am planning on riding them all in the future.

I bet all he wants is some attention, but I'd be afraid of someone running him over. Does he have a collar with an ID for his owner? If he's stray I'd take him home, but if he has a collar i'd toss him in my pannier bag and find his owner.

Can you maybe reach out to the bike community near where you live (maybe using the regional discussion section of BF.NET) and see if someone can adopt him/her if he needs a home? I think he's using up all of his nine lives by hanging around a bike path.

Honestly, running over his tail might save his life.

Hey jakereed, I also ride the Pinellas Trail. What part of the trail is this? It looks familiar, but I haven't seen the cat.

This section of the trail is just East of the Seminole Blvd. overpass. This cat is out there most days, but not every day.

I think he may belong to someone that lives along the trail, but he has no collar.
