Does anyone know the difference between the various Reynolds tubing numbers? Is it hierarchical? Or is just different alchemies depending on what kind of response in the frame you want? A LBS salesman said the 836 was the best.

A LBS salesman said the 836 was the best.Never heard of 836. Maybe he meant 853? Check www.reynoldsusa.com. The general ranking is by strength with 853 heat treated and air hardening at the top, then 631 a non heattreated version of 853 ,725 Heat treated cromo,525 non heat treated cromo,520 .... I's all equally stiff, but the higher strength stuff usually is built into lighter frames, and cost more. And ,not all 853 or any other is the same as there are different diameters and butting configurations.
