Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking - Best brake pads for Cantilever
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
first of all I am no Cyclocross rider but I think you are still the only one who know much about Cantilever brakes.
I have a XT-Brake form 1996 (BR-M737) and I need new pads.
There are two different versions of pads:
1. Pads like KoolStop Eagle, Swissstop RAT, ...
2. Cartidge systems like Fibrax, Trickstuff, ... In this case the pads are changeable and you have to use V-Brabe pads.
What are the best pads for a Cantilever brake ?

Koolstop Salmons - OK, I think they're the Eagles, but the red/salmon color. Stop great, but wear fast. If you get the combination pad with black on the back half, red up front, they wear a little longer and still stop pretty good.

IMHO- Depends upon the weather;
koolstop black in front and salmon in the rear is good in dryer or "cleaner" weather.
if wet and sloppy- the salmon pads are better all around.
While they do wear a little faster- i usually go with salmon.

I definitely go with Salmon or Dual. There is not that much difference in dry weather, but you feel the difference as soon as it rains or snows.
If you have threaded posts, go with the Mountain pads, which have much more material than the Thinline. If I compare them to the Eagle II, I find that the Mountain and Thinline have a "pattern" that works better in foul weather.
As for pads vs inserts, take your pick. Sheldon used to say that the pads are better... and around here, all pads and inserts are the same price, so I might as well get those that last the longest.
I like the feel of the all-black Kool Stops the best, and the reddish ones the least. The blacks do wear fast though. Currently I run black in back and dual compound (black/salmon) in the front. But I'd rather have ANY Kool-Stop than something by Avid...
