Advocacy & Safety - Critical MESS in Minnapolis Fourth of July

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm a pretty committed bicycle commuter, and I do believe in responsible cycling. I've been of mixed feelings about Critical Mass, specifically because of the disconnect between intent and execution. But last night burned me up, because it was a (pardon the pun) massive failure of intent.

For those of you who don't know Minneapolis, the Stone Arch bridge is the best place to watch fireworks. The bridge is a fairly narrow two-track railroad bridge that's been converted to two bikeways and two pedways in each direction. It's a few dozen yards down river from where the fireworks are set off, you're up above the river quite a ways, and there's room for lots and lots of people. Thousands. Packed shoulder to shoulder, stoller to wheelchair. It was already bad enough that people were trying to walk their bikes through the crowd. But then some cyclist idiots decided that was the perfect opportunity for a Critical Mass in their underwear. Great way to set an example.

There were already thousands of people who had cycled to the event as it was, which was the good example to set. What was the point of the CM? If the intent of CM is to tell motorists to share the road, how does taking an already auto-free bike and pedway send that message? If the idea is responsible cycling, how does mowing down dozens of spectators in a crowd enhance that message? One of the CMers shouted that this was a bikeway. Someone in the crowd shouted back "Not tonight!" I think our well meaning but misguided CMers really screwed this one up.

This gets added to my list of Cyclists Who Are All That (which would be separate post).

OK. Rant over.

CM isn't about sending a pro-cycling message.

CM is all about helping the mundane feel a fleeting and vain moment of the power of mob rule.

People mess up all the time. Why don't you stop by the next meet up and explain to them that they should be trying to foster more positive public reactions and explain the things you saw that you thought were negative.

Sooooooooooooooo, the cycling Critical Mass got blocked by a pedestrian Critical Mass????????

From your description, it sounds like some of the cyclists got "perturbed" about someone blocking their way.:roflmao2::roflmao2::roflmao2:

I thought Critical Mass was held the last Friday of each month throughout North America. Not so in Minneapolis?

Maybe the Underwear Critical Mess is held on a different night.

More so if the CM riders became the aggressors and attacked the cyclist corkers

So in Minneapolis, did the motorist get to stop their cars on their bridge and get out to watch the show?

If not, why not, since it was OK to do it on the bike path?

The underwear CM and corking stuff was/is stupid but it seems in this case they did have a point. How did cycle commuters get across the river to and from work if you shut down their only route?

Another question - do you guys end up with more flats after the 4th from broken beer bottles on the paths? Hawaii bike paths seem to be a favorite place to get drunk while lighting fire works (on the 4th and new years). Once the fireworks are gone, it must be fun to break the bottles on the path.

I can't speak for Minneapolis, but we have a riverfront MUP popular with 4th fireworks watchers. The city sweeps the path the next day. Problem solved.

That's what I imagine would happen. CM by it's very nature attracts the more confrontational activists of the cycling community.
