Is it easier for someone who never was involved in the sport to be an announcer?

If his profession is announcing, yes. What do you think would be the easier task, making Frankie Andreu a listenable announcer (for more than 2 minutes) or make Al Trautwig knowledgeable regarding cycling?

Looking back on the tour coverage, I think Hummer did ok. He seemed very knowledgeable, just a bit "robotic" in some of his comments and terminology, maybe too "polished"? I don't think his personality comes across as well as do the other three. But I think the same could be said for Al.
My biggest complaint, at the beginning of the race, his pronouncing George Hincapie as, George "hen-cup-p".

i thought trautwig was a professional, but he just never seemed to understand what he was covering. he just never caught on to what he was talking about

You missed the point. Al's purpose was never to be an expert, it was to ask questions of the experts so that they would convey their knowledge to the viewer.

Many many times I've heard Al ask a question that I know he knows the answer to. He doesn't ask it because he's ignorant. It's his job.
