I've been drinking Endurox R4 after my workouts for a recovery drink, but it leaves something to be desired. Does anyone have other suggestions, or products they like?

Before buying some Endurox I was drinking the milk and suger mixture in Joe Friel's book, but I'd prefer something a little more balanced and with the added nutrients and aminos that I get from a mix. My main problem with Endurox is the taste and that it never mixes well, even in the blender, always leaving little floaties.

Just wondering if there is anything better out there.

after using accelerade on the bike, balance it off with some 4:1 ratio sustenance, 1 bagel, 1 yogurt, raisins & o.j. --> you've got to have some solid food sometimes.

I've never had a problem mixing Endurox, but I also don't use a blender.

I have a 1L Nalgene wide-mouth bottle that I dump the R4 into and then add water. Shake well and it's good to go.

Which flavors have you tried? I've only drank the orange and find it tastes fine (although I don't really have a problem with the taste of anything).

I only tried the blender after the mixing was consistantly bad. Perhaps I got a bad batch or something, but the protein always seems to come out of the mix and float the bottom of the glass. I then switched to the blender method, but wasn't that much better, just smaller clumps.

Is there another flavor besides Orange? The taste is minor issue, mostly jsut wondering what other brands people had tried and there impressions.

Hmmm... maybe you did get a bad batch.

As for flavors, it also comes in a lemon-lime and fruit punch flavors along with the orange although I've yet to try either. Some of the local bike shops in my area sell single serving packets which is how I'd go about trying the other flavors. On a positive note, I read on a www.roadbikerider.com review that the fruit punch is actually quite tasty.

Good luck.

Endurox R4 is also bloody expensive (around $1/serving).

I buy Whey protein in bulk from Nutrition Express (http://www.nutritionexpress.com). They have the best prices and service I've found for supplements (generally, about half of what GNC charges).

After a hard ride, I mix about 12 oz of orange juice, with a scoop of vanilla-flavored whey protein. This makes a nice smoothie that gives me 13g of protein, and around 54g of carbs. Sometimes I'll also throw in a bit of Glutamine if I've had a really hard ride. It tastes a whole lot better than Endurox, and costs a whole lost less.

Hey SSP, I'm gettin' low on Endurox, maybe this time I'll give your recipe a shot. What do I need to know about which whey protein powder to get?

Re/Endurox, I like the fruit punch flavor the best... kind of a tutti-frutti flavor (pretty sweet though, if that's a problem for you). I tried the Lemon-lime... never again! Regarding floaties, I always wind up with a few, but not so much that I'd go to the trouble of using a blender. Any powdered drink mix is subject to the problem if exposed to air too much... powders absorb moisture from air which makes it hard to mix. Always re-seal after use quickly and tightly!

This is the one I usually order. It tastes pretty good, and they ship it quick.

However, I've noticed that my local CostCo has recently started carrying a 6lb whey protein powder. I'll probably pick up one of these soon to see how it compares.

Most of the whey protein powders are similar in terms of protein and carb ratios, although some of the "isolate" versions are more purified (and, more expensive). Buying in bulk from Nutrition Express or CostCo is about half the cost of places like GNC.

I use the generic slim fast drink for my recovery drink. $13.99 for 24 servings so cheaper than Endurox and tastes great.

I take a large glass of ice cold gatorade, add two scoops of 99.9% pure L-glutamine, 2 of those E-mer-gen C fizzing vitamin C packets, usually the tangerine with glucosamine.

Between the 3000% dose of C and the glutamine, I feel fine the next day.

Oh yeah, I also eat everything in the house.

I know this is going to sound kinda funny and gross at the same time. So on this past Saturday I was involved in a Police Officer Physical Agility Testing. Well due to a bad experience with a breathing problem a couple of years ago, I decided that exercise was great but I needed a bit something more. So the night before I went to the local Wal-Mart and went to the baby stuffs isle. I bought two bottles of generic Pedialyte. I drank one the night before to boost the electrolytes in my system. Then the next day just after the test I drank the second bottle. Yeah the whole thing. To my great amazement that's the fastest I've ever recovered from any strenuous exercizing. Like I said I was astonished at the recovery rate. Now yes it tastes like salt water, but it also has stuff like potassium chloride (to aid your muscles in recovery) and several other items that were aids. And it's cheap. I paid like $5.00 for both bottles.

Warning thread drift ahead!

Wabbit's critique reminds me of my own experience with Lemon-Lime Endurox. Think of a glass of snot. But I've read others post that was the best flavor. I have a (completely untested) theory that the water used makes a big difference in the way these beverages come out tasting. Obviously it's the case for water that, e.g., tastes/smells like oil, sulphur, chlorine, fertilizer, etc., but even for essentially normal water. Even if you don't notice the minerals or pH in the water itself, it can make a big difference when mixed with the powders.

Apparently Endurox tastes pretty yecchy as well, but it's also the consistency. It does look like snot, but that's not what I would have described it as...mine was a bit more x-rated.

Suddenly Endurox doesn't seem so bad.

I tried Accelerade and must say it sucks. I have read that a cheaper and dare I say tastier recovery drinks are any of the diet shakes, ie SlimFast, Boost, Ensure. I have made them a ritual at the end of my long ride. Don't take my word for it check out the following link for a better description.

I drink Boost too after workouts, especially if the ride doesn't start and finish at home or after a race. Slimfast is similar but tastes more like skim milk than regular milk so I prefer Boost.

I bought some of that protein from Costco and it seems great to me. $20 for 6 lbs has got to be a bargain. I like mixing it with apple juice but I have also been trying a few smoothie recipes I've come across.
