The tyres on my bike are starting to wear a bit, so I'm looking into a new pair.

My bike currently has 26 x 1.95 tyres, and I do a mix of mountain biking and cross country, so I would be looking for something which performs well on gravel, dirt and mud.

Any advice appreciated.

My advice would be to buy a bike that supports a more common MTB tire of the 26" variety.

Was that a typ-o or are you really trailing a 20"?

I used to go crazy for Panaracer Fire XC Pro's. Then I was in love with Kenda Nevegal 2.35" DTC's until this year. I decided to go out on a limb and try the Kenda Excavators in the same size and compound. I'm LOVING them so far!! Awesome grip!

Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm still fairly new to bikes.

Just went outside and checked, it's a 26" tyre, and a 23" rim I believe. Sorry, I have no idea where I got 20" from :p

I ride XC exclusively and use the Kenda Nevegal DTC (based on chelboed's advice) up front with a WTB Velociraptor on the back. The front is a 26x2.35 and the rear is a 26x2.1

For my riding I think the 2.35 is a little too large on the front, I'd prefer the lower rolling resistance of a 2.1 like I have on the back. I'm waiting for my Velociraptor to wear out on the back so I can replace it with another Kenda DTC, either the Nevegal or the Excavator. The Kenda sticks really well, especially the edges which is nice for turns and when you're "scuffing" over the side of roots and rocks. The Velociraptor has been just great and on center I'd say it has equal grip to the Nevegal (and the big paddles help in my local soil), but it doesn't have as much edge stick and it's pretty heavy and has a high rolling resistance.
