Road Cycling - Pick a part for a dream road bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK let's see how good we are collectively. Let's see what kind of bike we come up with. If anybody has already listed a part such as frame or wheels etc.. don't suggest a different part. One part per post. List approximate price too. We'll add it up when it's finished.
I'll start -
**** Headset - Chris King $120 ****
(no one can list a headset now)

Shifters/derailleurs/ti-cassette/chain [since they all have to be consistent] = Campagnolo Record 10. Priced at Branford...
$800
[Somebody PLEASE select the record CF crank set]
Waterford 2200 frame, with stainless steel head lug, custom geometery to perfectly fit you, front fork painted to match frame, and a custom fade paint job. Only $2,675.
A classic frame! :-)

Zipp Carbon Wheels 404's approximate cost $1300.00 usd. Laced to Campy hubs of course! These don't really go with the Waterford, but they are a sweet set of whees.

Speedplay X2 pedals. Price approx $165.00.
I would have gone with the titanium X1's but they have a weight restriction of 185 lbs. This might limit a few of us riding after we put this bike together.
SELLE ITALIA SLR Ti-Carbon Saddle, price at coloradocyclist,
109.99

If I added right we're at $5232 + tax and labor. We're missing a stem, handlebars, and seatpost. anything else? how about some titanium.
attached is a rough (really) sketch and I will need a loan!

Waitasec... We gotta have a crankset... and even though I've chosen other components, I'm going to propose the Campagnolo Record Carbon crankset (53/39) -- a steal at $800!

Here is an example of a Waterford fade!

And, a2psyklnut, I think those wheels would look just fine on a Waterford!
Look Carbon Ergo Seatpost:

$166.95

VERY nice! Love the Waterford lugwork.
I think this will be one very sexy bike with the trad frame and the cutting-edge components.
I think we should give some thought to a CF fork, though [appropriately painted], unless the Waterford steel is aceptable to everyone.
OK, now for the "nuts and bolts":
One pair of TUFO S3 LITE 195 gram tyres: $107 at world class cycles
One tube Vittoria Mastik 1: about $3.50
Cinnelli Cork Bar Tape :$20
Look Pedals: $150 for anything decent
Brooks Swift Saddle : $150 (titanium rails. What was the name of that place in new orleans that sells them, again??)
I'm sure that we could find a couple of $100 stems and seatposts, too!
Moots Ti Road stem, 229$

Ok. So when do we start to mass produce and when can I order mine. It's sounding pretty good right now.
:D
I sorta figured that someone might want to substitute a carbon fork, so the quoted price for the Waterford frame includes an extra $75 to paint the optional fork to match the frame. Of course, if you stay with the supplied fork, it will have polished stainless steel fork crowns!
Say, once we get this dream bike together, can I borrow it for next years RAGBRAI? To ride this bike for a week, I might actually be tempted to park my trusty Waterford-framed-Paramount for a few days!

Ti stems creak like all Heck, though... on the other hand, they're cool-looking and pricey... and light. Is anyone going to propose a CF handlebar to go with the fork, cranks and seatpost?
Incidentally, I forgot to quote a BB to go with the Record crankset...
So, we need a Campy Record 102mm BB = $90 at Branford Bike...

Nice bike so far, but for this bike to become a BIKE it still needs the most vital component and that's ME, the rider!
Cost? I'm priceless - at least that's what my wife tells me each time I come up with another creative excuse to ride.
Hey, wait a minute! You don't suppose she's being sarcastic....
A wife being sarcastic about bikes/riding? Naw.

Gruppo- Campy Record
Stem/bars- Cinelli
Saddle- Brooks Pro with BIG copper rivets
Rims- (2 pair of wheels) Mavic- for both clincher and sew-ups (tubular) wheels
Tires- clinchers- Michelin I've (used them) , Gomitalia or Vittoria ( look like good bets): Sew-Ups- "fat ones" and silk (if can be found) or high quality cotton like vittoria cx/cg.
Tape- Off The Front, comfortable as cork, lasts forever, re-wrappable
Chain-Sram/sedis
Bar Plugs- Velox, safer! anchored to bar- will stay in bar in a crash and have some cushioning if you land on 'em
Computer- ? I've been using Avocets for years and like 'em, there may be something better out there
Pedals- Campy or Look for road/racing or Time atac? for shoe I can walk in
Bottle cages- STEEL ONLY- lasts longer than aluminum, will not mark bottles
Saddle bag- big enough for patch kit, spare tire, 5 and 6 mm hex wrenches and spoke wrench
Pump- up in air! the Silca model, (that takes the Campy head). I like is no longer produced
Rim Tape- Velox
Tubes- very skinny with long threaded stems
Bottles- old Italian style w/ flip off cap and wide mouth or type made/distributed by Enervit
