I recently switched out the old (and pretty great) set of open pro's off my Sycip cross and moved into a set of Ksyrium ES's. Fantastic wheels. Strong, light, and if you ignore that freakish panging noise they make when you hit stuff, seemingly indestructible. However, I was blasting through the muddy rain the other day and noticed: my Koolstop Eagle 2's (grey compound) don't really work particularly well. It seems there are a couple of problems with the old design: They only cover about 30% of the available vertical braking surface on the Ks's - I am a bit concerned about wearing a rut into the breaking surface and weakening the rim, they were making the rims REALLY hot - think water evaporation temperature (and this was city driving, no great decent, and finally, they were really hard to stop with. Now they work OK when dry, and I've done a thorough check of their installation (it's fine), but their performance seems laking. I've been using this type of pad for years, they have always performed very well, but they don't seem to have adapted to newer rim designs.
