Southern California - Am I the only one who...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
...rides a bike because it's fun, great exercise, gets my competitive juices flowing and not to save the world? I'm not saying to leave the politics behind or anything like that, but it seems like every single thread boils down to "I'm riding my bike to save the world" these days.
I guess I'm just a conservative with left wing hobbies. I ride a road bike and do woodworking, both of which seem to draw an unusual number of environmentalists wackos...you know, save the rain forests, save the world from greenhouse gasses and save the cheerleader...save the world. Well maybe not the last one, but you know what I mean, then again, maybe not. When everyone is into Newspeak and it's a thought crime to even speak out about the religion of the left, some forget that there are other views out there, like the other half of the country thinks.
Go ahead, I can take it.:thumb:

i started riding my bike when i was 5 and i loved it. i knew nothing about global warming. in fact, when i was younger the "expert" scientists were predicting global cooling. i actually rode my bike to prevent snow in los angeles and crop damage, lol.
i had no idea until i got onto the interent that cyclist today are morally superior to non cyclists and are in fact saving the world from fat hummer driving, carbon emitting polluters.
of course i dont know any cyclists who drive cars or buy any products or material things that cause green house emissions.
yes, cylists are better people than everyone else. its true.
oh, and a colorful jersey makes you cooler too :)

I thought so too, that's part of the reason for this post. Maybe you should have read the post.

I don't know. I ride for the pleasure of the pain. Which isn't painful enough at times and then I seek more pain. To get more satisfaction. Which sometimes I simply cannot attain. Like yesterday, I rode to Mt. Wilson from the valley, starting at 10am, riding through the hottest part of the day, which didn't seem to be hot like I've known before, and the roads didn't seem that steep, as they have before, but I was about 10% off my usual pace. I get back home and I felt as though I didn't even ride. The same feeling you get when you laze around and never get a workout in the first place. Like I was being lazy.
On the other hand, I'm working out this whole riding nutrition thing. About 75% there.
So, in short. Yes.

I confused by the comment that woodworking attracts "environmentalist wackos." They're okay with the fact that you need to cut down trees to get solid wood?

I ride for the fun and exercise! If you see me drop some serious weight, then I'm riding to kick some ***! That's why I ride!:D....I'm with you Ralph, oh yeah, and to take pictures!:p

What does ***** equal? I know what *** is. I don't understand fun or excercise. I do like to take photos while riding. One of my favorites is the one I took of myself with Mono Lake in the background during the Sierra Double while riding between ruts on Hwy. 395.
Is riding fun? I don't classify it in the same category as "Weee!" fun. It's more of a "Catholic" type of fun. I can't explain it. I like the social aspect of cycling. The immediate recognition from some else who rides that you suffer from the same condition. And that they may be others in the world who might understand.

I think it's kind of strange also, but never the less, look at even Norm Abram, celebrity woodworker; even he is constantly going on about sustainable yield, plantation grown lumber and this and that. I do have to admit that there aren't as many wackos on that site as this one.:) Don't get me wrong, I do know and like many of the wackos here, but I really don't understand their obsession with destroying our society as we know it.

I drive 1-3 hrs to do a century ride that gets me back to where I started, doing nothing useful in-between; and where I eat and drink lots of chemically made foods.
I think I can help save the planet (or have less negative impact) if I just stay home and play video games. :D :p

You're right, I was being simplistic about it, but what I was really wondering was, why all the political crap outside of the P&R forum. Which brings me to what I believe is the real problem...liberals don't know they are being political because we are so inundated with left wing policy on every media outlet out there, the news (CNN), movies, TV shows and since it is everywhere, they really think everyone thinks like them and don't even consider other points of view.

Don't you know? No one would ever ride a bike if it wasn't to save a few dollars to donate to Cindy Sheehan, Al Gore, move on dot org, buy a NYT subscription, or fund a hatchet job on Christians, Jews or gun-tot'n red-staters (not really true of course ... just joking ... most blue cities are unsafe to ride a bike in--most bikers are not leftist wackos and only those pinko commies on the P&R forum even pretend to be bikers).
I ride for fun.
I post to change the world.
That, and to show just how smart and funny I really am.

"...rides a bike because it's fun, great exercise, gets my competitive juices flowing and not to save the world? I'm not saying to leave the politics behind or anything like that, but it seems like every single thread boils down to "I'm riding my bike to save the world" these days."
Not me. I ride my bike because it's fun and helps me be somewhat less fat.
"I guess I'm just a conservative with left wing hobbies."
Funny coincidence. I'm a left wing nut with conservative hobbies. In my spare time I enjoy clubbing baby seals and election fraud.
"...some forget that there are other views out there, like the other half of the country thinks."
Now that's just silly. Everyone thinks like me. Everyone.

post the pic, yo!
I ride because it is fun... but saving a few gallons of gas is a worthwhile endeavor that is a cool byproduct of something that I would happily do anyway.
Ultimately, I believe that until the American populace utilizes the many other means of creating energy we will remain influenced by a select group of a few people that might not have our best interests in mind. I wouldn't mind leasing our natural resources to the highest bidder in exchange for reduced taxes and equivalent social programs, but only as long as I can still swim in the ocean without getting covered with toxic goo.

I started riding to save on gas...now I wouldn't give it up for anything.
I love riding...the rush of air, the view of the city, watching all the faces watch me whiz by...its great.
but...alas I got sick over the weekend and wasn't able to ride home today...hopefully I'll be feeling well enough to ride home tomorrow.

Ok, here's the real reason for this thread in the first place. In a way it was done just to get some of you all wound up, just like it did (scooter and the tinman especially, though I surely didn't target you). What I was trying to show was that not everyone, or even a majority of people here believe in the same things you believe in and when you start threads with all kinds of liberal assumptions in them, they can be insulting to others (me) on this forum. I do not believe that humans or the carbon we exhale or big oil or big pharm or big tobacco or whatever your new enemy is, is the problem. I believe in freedom, the freedom that our founding fathers gave us 230 odd years ago and that the unelected courts that have bought into the environmental pseudo science, are taking those freedoms away from us everyday with the scare tactics used by Algore and his ilk.
So the next time you feel the need to espouse your political views with some comment about one of your pet peeves, just try to remember that many others do not agree with you and may take exception with your comments. And if you do feel the need to express yourself in that way, please expect that someone like me might tell you that you're wrong. However, most of the time I just ignore that stuff and log off because I just don't have the time for it, but do know this, it drives some people away that may not be as confrontational as me and this forum may lose good people in the process.
PS I hate the price of gas today also, but I put the blame squarely on the government and not on big oil.

Well, I do ride my bike because it's fun, but I don't care much for the exercise or the competitive juices. I don't bike to save the world, either. I am careful with my fume hood usage at work to help save the world. The thousands of dollars worth of energy per year that saves does far more than anything I might or might not do on a bike.
