Just curious what some of you think. I live close to Manhattan, but it takes me anywhere from 35 minutes to 2 hours to take my bike off-road. Frustrating but I pay low rent and I'm farely close to work.
I guess there's a tradeoff...
35 minutes isn't bad.
Where do you live? There's highbridge, cunningham, then you can go further up to areas like sprain or up in northern jersey to ringwood or down close to the jersey shore to hartshorne, etc.

I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I've been to Cunningham and like it, that's the 35 min.drive. The other areas you mention, I'm not crazy about driving that way. Traffic unless early on the weekends. Jersey Shore is a hike to get to, tolls are a killer. I really want to be out west. It would definitely be better if I didn't live in the city area.
It's not happening for a while.
DRIVE?
I live in carroll gardens and I can bike to cunningham in an hour on my stumpjumper fsr with the suspension locked out. It's a good warm up and the ride home is a good cool down.
Man up!
Driving into jersey isn't that bad cause my sis in law's house is like 10 min from hartshorne and 4-5 other parks there so I make it a day to hang out too. The tolls aren't that bad, it's just the bridge you gotta worry about, everything else is just a coupla quarters.

That's got to be a crappy ride to Cunningham Park. How do you go, Atlantic Avenue? I'd have to drive 20 minutes to get to a service road on the LIE to bike the rest. No thanks. Not that I can't do it, it sucks on a mountain bike. If I go the other way, I'd have to take a crazy route through the ghetto, and it would be stop and go. Again, no thanks. Not my idea of good day out.

Poach your rides. I'm sure there are lots of unofficial trails around. I see lots of people heading off into the woods along the Hudson north of the GWB on the greenway. Enforcement is nill. I used to ride unofficial trails in Alley Pond Park when I lived in Queens.
73rd then myrtle or wind around.
