Who is riding the Ride Across Indiana this weekend? This will be my first. Looks like it's going to be hot!

I'm driving up from NC for this one. Wondering about starting at Drury inn vs riding out to the start. I'm thinking extra time and miles aren't really going to help me finish.

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like getting a car anywhere near the start could be a challenge. ?When I get down there Fri., I'm going to look for a spot for my wife to drop me off. Something a mile or two from the start would be nice.

Getting to the start is easier than it sounds. You drive west on I-70 into Illinois, take the first exit, head north then turn right (east) onto the start road. Cars will be pulled over onto the shoulder, just pull up behind the last one.

I think you'll lose about three miles if you leave directly from the Drury Inn. Not much in the overall scheme of things but you will have to take a Sharpie pen to your souvenier T-shirt to correct the milage.

I misunderstood the first post. I was planning on riding my bike to the start, not shorting the course. Won't be staying at the Drury Inn though, so will probably have my wife drop me off at the start.

I'm coming solo, so nobody's going to drop me off, I have to either ride from the Drury, or ride from the Drury to the start (which I guess won't happen on I-70). I have read that the distance from Drury Inn to the Courthouse on 40 is the same as the distance from the start to the courthouse. I expect it will take a bit longer since it sounds the mass start has a police escort.

Anyone with experience here? I guess I'll map it to confirm the distance thing. If it's 6 miles, I'll just ride to the start. If it's 20 - I think probably not. If nothing else start from DI and ride to the courthouse. If the pack isn't there yet I can ride west until we meet, or wait them out.

Good luck to everyone riding RAIN. I rode it in '04 and '05. It's a great ride. Warm means tailwinds, so tear it up!

The ride to the start is short and easy and the warm-up is nice. At the gun, the leaders will take off in the low-30s so if you're looking to keep with that group, you need a warm up, anyway. And it's easier than dealing with the parking, etc. along the 2-lane road that the ride starts on. Now for a real warm up, ride the route backwards the day before, leaving your car at Elon College so you don't have to return to Terre Haute after the ride. Did that in '05 and it was the only way to fly!

For those in the midwest not riding RAIN, check out the new Ohio Double Century, also on Saturday, July 12, starting in Plain City. See http://www.outdoor-pursuits.org/biking/odc.htm. The route is interesting, low-traffic, and flat. If you're going, I'll see you out there!

Hi everyone, just noticed this post about RAIN. A group of us from the Great Lakes Forum is going to try to start the ride together if any of you are interested in joining us. Here's a link to the thread.

Well I'll be angling to get as near the front as possible for the police escort. Sounds like that's the plan for those of you in the Great Lakes Forum too. I'd love the chance to meet some people from BF, but I'm not sure how to identify anyone. I'll be in a yellow jersey on a blue DBR.

I'll probably try to get somewhere between the middle of the pack and the front. I don't think I can hang with the lead group for long, but don't want to get stuck at the back of the pack either. I'll be in a red sleeveles jersey riding a Celeste (Is there any other color?) Bianchi. Unless, of course the predicted thunderstorms come early, then I will be wearing a green rain jacket.
