Mountain Biking - What should i buy with my money??

Hey everyone, I am a beginning biker. I just got about $2000 to blow on a bike, does anybody have any suggestions on what i should buy?? I don't know anything about the different kinds of bikes;what is good and what isn't. So if I could get some help, that would be great.

You can get a pretty nice bike for $2K, but what kind of riding will you be doing?

You say you are a beginning biker. How long have you been biking and what kind of riding do you enjoy the most? Do you like downhilling or cross country trekking? Or a mix? Do you want a full suspension rig or a hard-tail?
$2k is a lot to waste on a bike that I think is kick-ass if you end up not liking it.

Yes, I agree in order to give you the proper advise you need to figure out what kind of riding you'll be doing. $2K can get you a lot of nice bikes.

If I were you, I would spend $1800-1900 on a bike, this way I have money left over for mods and gear! ;)

Once you figure out what type of riding you will be doing..SHOP AROUND. I cant emphasize that enough. I spent 3-4 weeks looking at bikes. I finally decided on a kona for XC riding..but i ended doing more "freeriding" with it. There were so many other bike brands that i could have purchased with the money i spent. I kinda regret it now but ill be careful with my next bike.

Build a bike dude. It's fun and simple and lots of satisfaction after. You can save on stuff by going on ebay and splurge on things like wheelset ( www.speeddream.com ) and frame ( because of warranty ).

Boy is that ever an open ended question.

1. What type of riding do you want to do, or do you even know yet?
2. How old are you?
3. Height? Weight? Build?
4. Do you have past experience on BMX bikes, sport bikes, or off-road motorcycles? Road bikes?
5. Do you tend to be the type of person who picks up new sports quickly, average, or does it take you quite a while?
6. Do you ski or snowboard?
7. This isn't a showstopper, but more important than you may realize, what type of riding do your friends do?

This probably looks silly but I numbered them so if you actually answer you won't have to copy and paste the questions again and asked so many broad questions because the bike has to match the rider and without any of us knowing a little more about you we can't recommend a bike that would be a good fit for you.

For XC riding and racing hardtails.. you can't beat Cannondale.

How about buying two bikes? For $2000 it's possible.

I'd buy a Specialized FSR XC for about $1,200 and then buy a K2 Brass Monkey for $600.00 and have $200 for a helmet, gloves and some basic tools and a mini-pump.

How about not spending quite so much money if you're a beginner? You could invest for your retirement, or put it into a savings account just for Taco Bell. Maybe that's just me, though, my most expensive bike was $300...8 years old but NOS...yeah, $2000 is a he** of a lot of money. (maybe you are independently wealthy?) :D

I think you may have said it all there. Unless you are a dedicated cylclisty you may very well be blowing your money. If you are a newbie, I think it is unwise to spend that kind of money on a bike. It would be a lot of cash to have hanging in the garage. Then again, maybe you have a lot of cash. :D
