I know in Specialized's line-up, the lowest you're going to get for an mountain bike is going to be around $360 (HRXC). I know it's also hard to get under $300 in Trek as well. I think your best bet would be to go for a used bike. It's a little riskier and may lead to you having to replace out heavily used parts (derailers, brakes, and you might have to do some rim straightening). I really think an extra $100 will be a little better for you in the long run.

Any $250 bike is going to be comparable. Just buy whatever.

+1. Gawd, this forum is fraught with '$250 what bike should I get?' threads. Should be a separate forum just for this.

Yeah, just go buy a 2008 WHATEVER.
