Foo - Gross Thread---Toenail fungus

I know, I know---certain things are better left unsaid. However, I have officiated for 35 years, and my feet have been stepped on by catchers and by linemen; in short, both big toes are gruesome-looking. Has anybody tried the pills that get rid of toenail fungus? What, if anything, works?

I am very sorry to gross all of you out, but I would like to hear your thoughts on this...and do not think of me wearing sandals!:roflmao2:

Man, a few years ago (it may still be running, I don't know), there was a commercial (for what, I have no idea) that depicted little gremlins ripping a big toe toenail off. *cringe* Nasty, nasty.

Yep---they (the toenails) look disgusting---but I hear that the pills available for them can really rip up one's liver. Just wanted some input.

you sure it's fungus and not bacteria?

Mercurochrome is a darn good antiseptic that you can put directly on your toe.
otherwise you can go to a foot doctor and see what they would recommend.

antibiotics taken as pills have a lot of side effects, need to be prescribed by a doctor and are often combined with an external antiseptic anyways.

If you're thinking of taking some sort of Flucanozole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluconazole), I took it with no ill effects.

I took it to fight Coccidioidomycosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccidioidomycosis), not toenail fungus, but suffered no symptoms that I am aware of, either good or bad. My issue was solved surgically, the Flucanozole was just a precaution.

Downside: Ten years ago it was $10/pop.
Upside: I didn't have toenail fungus...but that was the least of my worries. ;)

No idea. Right now I'm missing a toenail. It got caught undr the battery compartment of a motorized wheelchair.

I saw the guy stuck in a rough spot on the sidewalk while riding my bike to work and I stopped to help him get unstuck (I just thought, "Hey, what would I do if it was Stephen Hawking, and why should I treat this guy any different?). Anyway I had him disengage the clutch or what ever it is and the chair rolled back on my toe. I very quickly got him over the rough spot and told him the sidewalks were crap that he should take the bike lane.

What the heck. Very few cyclists use the bike lanes properly anyway, and their always full of pedestrians. If it keeps my toe from being crushed again I'll gladly go around him if I see him on the bike lane.

tea tree oil. It is a strong anti-fungal. Couple of drops on each nail and give the rest a wipe down with a Qtip soaked in oil. Takes as long as pills without the internal concerns. Might make your skin tender. You'll feel it working and tingling till you get used to it...

tea tree oil. It is a strong anti-fungal. Couple of drops on each nail and give the rest a wipe down with a Qtip soaked in oil. Takes as long as pills without the internal concerns. Might make your skin tender. You'll feel it working and tingling till you get used to it...

My wife has something similar festering on her toenail and the regular application of the tea trea oil burned whatever it was off in no time.

Aren't there potential side effects to the pills that might put one at the top of the liver-transplant list (even in front of the guy who ate a pizza topped with death cap/destroying angel mushrooms?)

They will blood test you first to make sure your liver is working right. I had the same thing a couple of years ago. Try 21 years of having to wear steel toe boots to work everyday. Ick.
Try the tea tree first but if it's been going long enough, the doc will probably give you something to attack it from the inside out.
Side effects, very quick acting laxative. Take it way early in the morning before you head off to work. I actually went back and told my doc that since I was the first one he had prescribed that too. Usually only hits you once in the morning. I know TMI, but that's what Foo is for.

That works for me. My toe nails look bad from the winter. Come Spring, flip flops, salt water, and sun, it all goes away.

Ditto. I know someone who used it for her toenail fungus and it zapped it in short order, although I don't know that I'd use the term "burn"- it's actually very gentle. If you're going to use it, you need to get the real stuff, though- not a tea tree oil soap or whatever- you probably need to go to an herbalist or a place that specializes in herbal meds.
But first see a doctor. Don't expect him/her to know anything about this stuff, but just check to make sure it is what you think it is. Get a diagnosis first.

This little guy always makes my toes shrivel when it goes and opens up the nail of the big toe like the hood of a car.

This may be coming in sooo late but i just want to pour out my feelings about this fungus on my toenails. I'm really uncomfortable and it's really embarrassing. I'm treating it with fungusil now. Just started with it. so far i have been seeing improvements. i'm starting to believe my friends who said this med is effective. i can't wait to have them all gone!

+1 Might want to cut the tea tree oil at first. I've diluted it with Vit E oil (mostly safflower oil) from Walgreens.

Just cut off the toes....no more toenail fungus...guaranteed.
