I have looked on some labels of food and have seen on the ingredients list yeast extract. Some basic research shows it is similar to MSG in the way your body deals with it. Is it bad to have yeast extract? If so why? What exactly does it do? Thanks

MSG has many different names, some are autolysed yeast, yeast extract, aromat and modified soy protein among others.
On some labels they will use a few of the names so they can have the ingredient lower down on the list.
so essentially it is the same thing as MSG?
Just how bad is it for you to eat?

Yeast extract isnt the same thing as msg but it may contain msg.
MSG is only one of several forms of free glutamate used in foods. Free glutamate may also be present in a wide variety of other additives, including hydrolyzed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolysis) vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autolyzed_yeast), hydrolyzed yeast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeast_extract#Hydrolyzed_yeast), yeast extract (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeast_extract), soy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean) extracts, protein isolate, "spices" and "natural flavorings." There is a lot of hype about msg being really bad for you, but a lot of it is unfounded.
MSG is naturally present in certain foods.
That said, I still stay away from added msg, the same as I try not to add salt to my food.
