Another "more bike commuters out and about" thread.

This article brightened my morning:

From freeway to greenway as workers dust off bikes (http://www.startribune.com/local/24049154.html)

The article in a nutshell: Bike commuting is way up in Minneapolis. Bike shops are selling more bikes, mainly commuter-style rigs, and people are dusting off their older bikes.

The "Greenway" they refer to is a sort of bike-only highway through town, completely segregated from auto traffic. It goes under city streets, with little onramps and offramps that take you back up to street level. Here's a good picture. (http://www.uscoles.com/bikepix/bpmidtowngreenwayl.jpg). It is perhaps the most amazing piece of bike infrastructure I've seen in a major metro area in the US.

Even in the suburban wasteland I live in just outside of the Twin Cities, I see about a dozen other bike commuters on my way to work. My employer just tripled the number of bike racks, and is starting to expand the shower facilities.

Hopefully this trend will continue into the colder and darker months.

It's been trending up pretty handily since I started in spring '05. This winter I saw more folks than ever, but come March when it got ugly for a loooooooooong time I noticed I was often the last man standing. But yeah, they're coming out of the woodwork. I expect to start seeing some growing pains from this as well.

As to the Greenway: Daylight only. Great idea, but Minneapolis isn't doing much to keep it well regulated.

SeqFault,
I was going to post a link to this article but I see you already beat me to it!

Reading the article and the plethora of comments I was pleasantly surprised at the number of positive comments and at the distance a number of commenters commute. Although probably more pro bike commuting people read and comment on the article than those uninterested in bike commuting so that might skew the comments toward the positive.

I noticed that as well. As a casual reader of the Strib website, I also notice there are a small number of Jason Lewis-ish posters that seem to comment on every single article with the same comment ([insert public works project here] won't solve anything, waste of taxes, it's just like the LRT, this is why 35W went down, etc).

And I'm sure this is getting posted on every bike forum Minnesotans visit, directing relentless hordes of Internet-using cyclists to the article's page.

Wow, those ramps up to street level are STEEP! Yes, me, new to commuting and still hating hills.

Ya know when I started commuting I had one 'big' hill to get over on my way home. It was my nemesis. Last fall I got to the top, feeling not terribly challenged, and noticed I had climbed it in my big ring. Embrace and crush your enemies.
