Bicycle Mechanics - Shimano 10s cassette, Campy 10s der/shifter

I know this has been beat to death but the search function returns an amazing number of hits with these particular words.

I have ended up owning a nice rear wheel w/ Shimano body, but my bikes are all Campy. People say you can run the 10s interchangeably with no problems and no adapters required. Other people say it'll skip and cause problems.

Have you actually run a Shimano 10s cassette w Campy 10s der and shifters? Results?

Thanks. I'd rather not learn this the hard way and the wheel is still in the box so I could ebay it if it won't work.

Have you actually run a Shimano 10s cassette w Campy 10s der and shifters? Results? Not personally, but it's been discussed on a national forum. One of the members there ran that combo and said it ran fine as long as she used a mavic(?) chain. Any other and the shifts became sloppy.

I've heard mixed reports. Some report adequate to good results and some poor. However, the appropriate Jtek Shiftmate will pretty much guarantee the combination will work. For $35, it's cheap insurance.

The only problem with Jtek is that if you want to run a Campy wheel you'll have to remove the Jtek and readjust the RD. Other alternatives may be to replace the Shimano compatible freehub with a Campy compatible freehub. This may or may not be possible, depending on the particular hub. Or you could buy a custom cassette from American Classic or Wheels manufacturing. These are spaced for Campy and splined for Shimano. Jtek is the least expensive alternative.

Right, if the OP is going to switch between Campy and Shimano wheels, the Jtek will be a bit of a nuisance to deal with. If he is going to use the Shimano wheel exclusively, the Jtek is certainly the least expensive fix. I've heard mixed things about the AC and other make respaced cassettes too so they may be a more expensive but less than perfect alternative too.

Ok, since it's basically a freebie wheel, I sprung for the AC cassette, will report back later.

Yes I have.

I made the same inquiry as you and received the similar responses. I eventually went with the late, great Sheldon Brown who advised me that the spacing was 99.9% identical and a flaw in shifting would not be detected.

He was, of course, correct. No problems whatsoever!

I've seen plenty of Campy guys pick up a Shimano wheel from neutral support with no ill effects. Might have to play with the RD barrel adjuster some, but you might do that with any new wheel.
