Hi for a few weeks I will be using a Shimano Alivio Front Derailleur until my XT arrives. This derailleur came stock with my trek 4900 2002, will it work with a 9 speed drive train/chain?

It may shift "slow" as it is a bit wider than a nine speed der. Set the cable a touch slack and over shift a bit for the upshifts.(That was pretty technical, huh?) You can also squeeze the cage down just a little to quicken the shifting.

I still use the Alivo front D on my bike even though I replaced the entire drivetrain except the front D with Deore LX 9-speed.

It shifts just fine... It is fast and ackurate (say with a GWBush ackcent :)

I wanted to use the LX front D but the mounting bracket is higher and sits right on top of a bottle cage boss YIKES! So for now I use the Alivo-8-speed front D until I get the time to move the bottle-cage-bosses :(
