Road Cycling - Lightest bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What is the absolute lightest production bike? And does anyone have pictures and specs of some really light custom bikes?

I built up a Litespeed Ghisallo last year with a crazy parts spec that came in just a touch under 14 pounds according to the scale at the UPS store. Needless to say it climbed like a scalded monkey but did not descend with very much authority. It had Zipp 303 wheels, full Record kit minus crank which was a FSA carbon, magnesium stem, EC-90 bar, ti post, carbon saddle, metawire cables and housing, etc.

Lightest bike I have seen is some cannondale road bike. I think the tech at performancee said it weighed in at around 15 pounds.

The lightest, stock, out of the box, bike I have seen was the 2003 Giant TCR composite 0 (Full Dura/Ace, Kyserium ssc sl) in a medium, 15.6 pounds.

Thanks for letting us know that. I have the TCR1, same frame as the TCR0 only my bike has the Ultegra GS, no wonder it feels light. :D

I have always heard it is (or maybe was) a Litespeed Vortex.
Here's more info on the Cannondale:

Principia make some of the lightest bikes around, that build into 14lbs using FRM components. You can get lighter ones from custom builders, but they are not as durable, or comfortable as Principia.

Check out Roark bicycles.
For individuals that made their bikes ungodly light, visit wwwlwrenchscience.com and look for the custom bikes. Somebody had one just under 10 lbs.

i forget who said it, colnago maybe, but it was something like "everybody wants to climb on a light bike, but nobody wants to descend on one."
i'm not a fan of super-light bikes. what i am a fan of is lightweight wheelsets.. one day i'd like to buy a nice ADA wheelset (~900g for the pair.) but that won't be happening anytime soon.

that article about the cannondale was kinda funny...I wonder if the lower center of gravity (caused by the weights) helped make the bike more stable descending...

Just a very cheap advertising gimmick by Cannondale.
You have to hand it to them though. They are a business after all.
