I'm just looking for some comfirmation that what I'm hoping to set up for my touring build will work. If not, I'm looking for corrections/suggestions.
I'm planning on using a 9 speed 12-27 cassette, Ultegra 6500 RD and a compact crankset (50/34). My shifters are 9 speed. This should work with a regular double FD shouldn't it? Also, if I go with a new external bearing crankset advertised as "10 speed compatiable," will it also work with a 9 speed set up?

Shimano says their double fd's work with both a standard road (53/39 or 52/39) crank and a compact crank. The "10-speed" crank should work fine.
If you are planning real loaded touring, unless you are VERY strong, a 34x27 gear isn't likely to be low enough unless you stay in relatively flat areas. Most tourists use a triple crank with a 26T or 24T granny or even an MTB crank with a 22T or 20T granny and a Xx32 or Xx34 cassette.

I'll second what Hillrider says. Your listed set up will function just fine. However, if you're really going to be hauling loaded panniers and plan on climbing any hill, I'd reconsider your gearing. A mountain rear derailleur and mountain cassette would be a good idea if you already have the cranks, or consider a triple.

Yeah, that gearing is not low enough if you plan on doing some loaded touring. Down to a 17 inch low gear would be nice, but that would require a triple.

Since I'm not THAT strong, I'll go back to the drawing board and see what I can come up with for a triple set-up.
