Rescued this from a neighbor and decided to do the internal gear thing on it. It rides great if you like the beach cruiser feel. I had already promised it to an old college buddy for his lake house, but several other neighbors were begging for it. It really is great for cruising the neighborhood or going to the farmer's market. I think I'll internalize a couple more.

Offload to whomever will ride it. Too many of those tandems just become dust collectors and storage hogs in garages for 20 years, then wind up in the dumpster or at a yard sale.

Can you buy a wheel with the internal gear hub, or did you have to build it yourself? I would like to put gears on my dd's trailer bike, but I have hesitated to build a wheel myself. It's 30 years since I felt (stupid enough) able to do that. (Twins--ds is heavier so he rides stoker on the tandem, dd is getting a free ride now on a single-speed TAB.)

I doubt you'll find one already built. Any shop that has been around should have plenty of sturmey-archer AW hubs, though, and would probably fix you up at a reasonable price.
