Kodak is announcing a 50MP CCD sensor.

Hasselblad is going to use it in their next gen digi--estimated price $30k, but I remember when the 10MP back was $40k.

Megapixels: blah, no drool here. All I see is huge files and the same crappy performance. Give me much higher dynamic range, really high ISO, and NO NOISE. Give me a Foveon chip (3 colors at every pixel) that fulfills its promise. I would take a 6 MP chip with these characteristics over that Sony 24 MP 35mm-format chip.

kewl.. and it's rated at an ISO of ~ 6 ... ..
^^maybe when our sun supernovas you can actually take a photo with it sans teh strobe. :D -?

Megapixel envy is like megahertz envy. It's made up by marketing folks, and most people wouldn't know what to do with all that mega-whatever anyways.
Like carbonlife, I like pixel quality. Give me a 6-10 megapixel RAW file, from a sensor that is 24x36 in size (to get back my DoF), has virtually no noise from ISO 25 to 25600 (wide sensitivity range for creative control), has >12 stops of dynamic range (so I don't have to use PS tricks on high-contrast scenes), and has very accurate color. If it comes on a body that has a Leica M-mount, even better!
I hear y'all, really I do, but....
I print mural size images in the darkroom. At 6x4 feet megapixels actually mean something.
Also nice to be able to crop to the optical preformance of the glass and not the size of the sensor.

This is why Hasselblad/Kodak is spending so much money making giant digital sensors:

And yet, they still haven't matched good 4x5 film. It's not even merely about sharpness, but look at the contrast, too. Almost none of the image fades into black or is blown out in featureless white.

Dont hold your breath. When was the last time Pentax made a prof level SLR? The Pz1p certainly wasnt one. I am a die hard Pentax guy and have owned their top of the line SLR's for 20 years.. but they have never been of the "professional" level of Nikon and Cannon. Than being said, I think my K10D is a better camera than a Nikn D200 wich is much more expensive. I am now trying to decide if the K20D is worth the upgrade.

yep...
and it's still about the lens for me.
I'd be happy with 21 (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=15710) megapixels.
C'mon, Canon -- make that f1.0 50mm EF lens again. That sucker rocks.
I wish I could take halfway decent pictures:(
