Ok, so I have been lurking here for a few months and have posted a couple times in a few threads, but this is my first thread by myself. I'm 24 and I weigh 323 down from 350+. I have been riding an old POS X-mart Pacific Scorpio MTB. and as crappy as it has been I have caught the bug for riding. I absolutely love it. I have gotten up to doing 15 mile fitness rides, and I have commuted about 4 times to work (20 miles RT). It's great, but the bike is seriously too small for me. I feel all cramped up on it.
So my Wife and I are coming up on our 1 year wedding anniversary. I recently got her into biking too. I got her an old POS X-mart 10 speed. She likes to ride now, but the bike is too large for her, and it is seriously in pretty rough shape... So for our anniversary we decided to get new bikes for each other. We went to 3 different LBS shops today. It was great fun. First shop they were very friendly, answered all of our questions in very deep detail, but we were both a little shy about riding bikes at this point. We leave shop 1 and head to shop 2. (these two shops are owned by the same company but the vibe between them was totally different. They were nice but they didn't really go out of there way to help us. SO we left again with otu a test ride. we then walked across the street to their competitor, who was pretty friendly and helpful and we ended up trying several bikes each.
I have had my heart set on a Surly CC or a Surly LHT. None of these shops were Surly dealers but the last one did have a Surly Steamroller 56cm. SO I gave my first whirl at Fixie riding. To be honest it was a little bizarre but at the same time kinda cool. If i lived in a flatter neck of the woods (like when i was in Florida) I might have considered one of these, but mostly i was just checking out the Surly brand in general... 2 thumbs up. the bonus is they can special order any of the other Surly bikes, so this is an option. I also tried a Trek Portland 58 cm. I liked it a lot, the disc brakes, the 105/ultegra components were pretty sweet, but 1600 is a bit out of my price range.
The little lady tried out a left over '07 Trek 2100 WSD 47 cm. and couple hybrids, but i think she is leaning towards a roadie. after browsing around online i think we are gonna try to find her a Trek 1.2 WSD 47 cm
As for me there are 2 shops listed on Surly's website in the area, so I'm gonna hit them up to see if they have actual LHT and CC in stock so I can get a feel for them.
Thats all for now, hopefully within the next couple of weeks I can post a new thread with some fresh bike porn for all to oogle at.
Bikefully yours,
Steve
