Hello to all,

I have been lurking here for some time, and I guess my whining about how much I missed cycling was bad enough that my wife bought me a Marin Muirwoods 29er for my birthday to get me back into riding!

I cycled a great deal as a teen, was away a few years during schooling, and became a commuter for a number of years when I had bad cars. Injury from a car wreck (broken neck) took me off the road bike I loved so much (can't handle the angle on my neck). Got a MTB a number of years ago, but it wasn't a correct fit and annoyed me to no end. Commuting on it in SoCal seemed to have driven me into asthma,so I packed it into the garage and quit as my second job became overwhelming and swallowed all my personal time.

Got back in shape about 7 years ago and held it together for about 3 years. Then I got injured during a fencing demo the week after getting laid off my 9-5 job and losing my health insurance. By the time I could walk normal again the weight was climbing back on board, and a new job allowed me zero time to do anything about it.

Now I'm back in school working to place myself into the wonderful world of flying but first turning wrenches on airplanes, and later flying them. At 243 pounds I need to lose weight to fly the kind of fun little planes I dream off. The FAA considers a normal weight for a person in an airplane to be 170 pounds...while I doubt I can get that low, I can probably get below 200 again.

Thanks to all here for sharing their stories and getting me to the point of getting back on a bicycle again!

Welcome! The Marin is a great choice, I saw one in person recently and seemed to be a great build for the money. Post pics! :)

Thanks for the welcomes. I'll try and get a photo of the bike up once I find my camera....which has vanished in the process of moving...!

My brother has been a firefighter and EMT in Redlands for the past 6 or 7 years, he just moved back to the east coast though. Welcome to the forums.
