View Full Version : Weight loss schwag
Do any of you guys promise yourself bike stuff as a reward for weight loss?
I admittedly only have 30 pounds to lose--and I may stop at 20--but I figure it's a good way not just to motivate hitting my weight milestones, but to keep from making a ton of bike purchases all at once.
Here's my list. Do you have one? I'm currently at 215.
Wt. | Reward
209 | FSA Compact Pro handlebars
204 | Another set of bibs
199 | Garmin 750 SCHRM GPS
194 | New tunic
189 | Haven't decided yet. Ice cream party?

I really haven't tied mine to weight, though that is one of my major goals. Rather, I have tied mine to time spent biking. My next big purchase will be a Garmin edge, and then a set of lights in the fall, which will also be well needed by that time.
Next summer I hope to get a used roadie. Might not seem like much overall, but in between will be things like a new chain, some new gloves, some bar wrap, fenders, etc. Things that are smaller, and need based.
I have committed to making my investment in cycling proportional to the amount of time already spent cycling.

:PI just listen to the voices in my head and do what they tell me; otherwise they start shouting. :p

my goal would be to drop as much weight as possible before i build a wheelset that i want without breaking them. i havnt weighed myself lately but i think i have 40 pounds to go. i dont want to build rims for a 250 pounder when i plan on hitting 200 anyways. i thought i was going to have to build a rear wheel when i popped a spoke on my MS ride with 50 miles to go. nobody had a spoke so i had to just ride it and hope more dont break along with the rim on the climbs :thumb:

Interesting idea. I guess my problem is that I really don't have a weight goal in mind. I started out at 275 the first of the year and am now down to 240 with 10 of those gone since I started commuting about 5 weeks ago. I'm thinking I want to see what I look like at 220 or maybe 210 and then go from there. As for a gift for myself I guess it would be something practical such as lights so I can keep going this fall.

Now, I have a totally different approach. I specced my wheels for a 300 pound man because I generate a lot of torque when I ride anyway. ;) I do reps on the lag press for a workout weight on a cam action press at the weight of 650/720 pounds for normal workout weight.
I also ride fast on rough roads, so my wheels take a pounding, no matter if I try to ride light or what. The few extra grams rotational mass don't matter much to me since I am far less likely to do a face plant from a front wheel disintegrating on me.

Nope.. no rewards here. I just want to drop to 170lbs so I can finally win some damn bike races. Grrrr...
I figgered that if I ever get down to what I weighed in college, I'd look up my college girlfriend ;)

If I promised myself new schwag based on my weight loss, I'd never get anything new.
I thought about a mistress but the wife said no. :)

I'm not losing any weight, but I reward myself for my increased mileage goals:
- 3000 mile year: Surly Cross-Check to replace 17 year old beater MTB I was riding
- first century in over a decade: Performance Ultra bibs
- first 200km: generator front wheel (SON28, DT RR1.1, DT 14ga)
- first double (coming up on Saturday): Supernova E3 for the dynohub
- century (or longer) per month (for 3/4 of the year): Assos F1 Mille bibs.
- 400km (planned for next year): lightweight upgrades to bike (crank, derailleurs, etc.)
9 more lbs. to go and I get a new road bike!

My ex used to say that about my guitars.
Funny thing is...I've still got the guitars.

Never thought of it as a reward, but I suppose these could be rewards:
Loose 20 pounds (225) and I get to ride my road bike again.
Loose 35 pounds (210, and my ideal/goal weight) and I HAVE to buy new clothes.
The ice cream party sounds good:thumb:. I make some good ice cream, so maybe I will add the ice cream party (along with a few of my favorite homemade cakes) as a reward..........so I can regain the weight and think of more rewards when I loose it.....and on and on.

I get a new bike for every 100 lbs lost. I got a new Trek 7.3 FX after the first 100, and now only 50 lbs more until I get a new Trek 520 touring bike, then I'll have a total loss of 200 lbs.
I've dropped 30 pounds as of today... since April 1.
From 248 to 218.
At 225, I got a new Trek carbon bike (the Madone 5.5)
At 220, I got new bibs, shoes and a red helmet that matches the bike.
I'm happy with all that, of course. But what is amazing to me is that:
1) I can grab the drops and pedal without hitting by belly.
2) I can stand up and hammer up hills. It makes me so happy I could cry.
3) I need new jeans, my XXL T-shirts are too big now, some of my XLs are actually baggy and I see myself in a large in another 10 pounds.
4) My mummy-style sleeping bag actually fits me. I will be able to zip it up on a six day bike camping tour I start this weekend.
And... 5) My wife says I don't snore anymore when I sleep.
I sleep better, have more energy and am now totally motivated to go all the way... under 200 by fall.... at 175 by the end of the year.
Hmmmm... wonder what rewards I should think about for my next goals?
I'm not a Clyde anymore. I started this when I weighed 205, so I barely qualified. But being 5'7", that was a lot of extra weight. I'm down to 183.5 now :).
I haven't bought myself anything as a reward. I just get new stuff when I need to replace.
On the other hand, anything to help keep you motivated to continue the suffering is good.
When I hit the -50# mark, I'm gonna buy me a new bike. Touring bike. Leaning twords a Cannondale T-2. Not completly sure yet though. Got 41# to go, so I have a little time yet to make up my mind.
If I promised myself new schwag based on my weight loss, I'd never get anything new.
Because you're no good at losing weight, or because you're not trying to?
For me, it's as much about spacing out my purchases as it is about the weight loss.
However, that said, in April '08 I was 30 pounds heavier than in April '07. The first six months of this year were terrible, health-wise and parenthood-wise, so exercise and sleep schedule both went to hell at the same time comfort eating went through the roof. I really don't like being this weight, and I like breaking long-term goals into short-term ones, so...
I can grab the drops and pedal without hitting by belly.
Yeah, it's hard to breathe right when your diaphragm keeps going BUP! BUP! BUP! BUP!
