Tomorrow's commute looks like it will be a doozy (from WTOP):

"A wind chill advisory is in effect from Thursday night through Friday morning, for just about the entire Washington area. With northwest winds blowing at 15-to-20-miles-an-hour, the weather service is warning of wind chills down to five below zero."

Looks like the media blew things out of proportion, as is their normal behavior.

I rode home at 2am. It was really cold and windy. I didn't check the temperature or wind chill before I left...somethings are better left unknown. However, after some adjustment I was fine. The commute home is only eight miles but I was happy a didn't punk out and catch a cab home.

Or in this case, didn't blow... ;)

Couple crosswinds, but all-in-all not too bad of a ride.

DJudd-

Be careful on those 2am jaunts through the city. I don't want to be reading about you in the District Extra section of your paper.

is actually pretty safe. I saw almost no one and really enjoyed the ride

My hat's off to you guys. I've had a number of interviews recently that have prevented my riding most days. I have to say that I'm a little reluctant to get on the bike when the temps are in the teens and twenties-I did go hiking, however, last weekend when daytime temps in DC were 8 degrees (colder at Skyline). I was impressed to see about 6 or 7 riders on my drive home the other night. If this weather continues I'll probably resume my riding in March and turn to hiking or the trainier for my cardio.

This weather is a piece of cake. I've had to partially unzip my coat toward the end of most commutes. As for hiking -- I have to wear my full ski parka when I walk anywhere. I'm much warmer on my bike with just my long Gortex overcoat and overpants over my office clothing. Even though it would be a few minutes quicker, taking my car just seems too much of a hassle.

I have to say that I am really impressed by the discipline that the people that ride trainers and do health club things have. If I had to turn to hiking or a trainer for my excercise, I would never get any excercise ever. How do you do it?

Welcome to our world. Typical Chicago weather.... but for some reason, we haven't gotten it as bad as you guys yet- some bad days, but mainly bearable with slightly lesser winds with temperatures in the 20s, and wind chills in the single digits.

My hats off to you guys who live in the eastern parts. In northern California, if I see 25 degree, I say "it's going to be a cold morning ride." But those of you who are battling temps below zero are the real warriors. The only thing I would like but cannot do would be to icebike; looks like extreme test of endurance.
Stay warm!

Kansas doesn't have any hills but we have lots of wind. Coldest I have experienced this year was -8 with windchill, and yes I had to ride into the wind. The Area around my eyes that wasn't covered by my ski mask actually hurt bad it was so cold.

The main thing that I have noticed about all this cold is that I MUST wear multiple layers to keep my knees warm or they make me pay for it.

I find the main problem with riding in the cold is that my eyes immediately tear up. This clears after a couple of minutes, but it drives me crazy in the interem.

What a fun commute this morning! Around four or five inches of snow on the ground in Metro DC, poorly cleared secondary roads, and not too much traffic.

Best part was getting into work and realizing most of the train and car commuters either hadn't yet arrived or were working from home!

Same for me, Schiek. My receptionist just arrived via Metro, but nobody else in my office is coming in. I swear I have seen more traffic on days when the Government was shut down.

The secondary roads are so poorly cleared that it was easier (and more fun) to ride on the uncleared parts.
