My KHS Aero is begging for me for new wheels (rims, hubs, tires, the whole shabang) -
can anyone recommend a local shop (nyc or bklyn) and what would you recommend?
The bike is ridden 100% on nyc streets (w/ front brake) - I want something light/strong and not have to sell a kidney to pay for it. If there is a huge difference, I can go online however prefer to eyeball it and take it home. What can I expect to pay for a decent set?
Thanks in advance.

You can get some decent wheels from Trackstar, NYC Velo and BikeWorks.

Formula's laced to Deep V's seem to be the standard and don't cost very much.

i got my wheels built at trackstar. they know what theyre doing and are priced about average. i would try to get hubs with hollow axles so you can replace the regular bolts with locks, as bike and wheel theft is pretty much a regular thing in nyc. also, i went into continuum the other day, over on 13th and B. the owners a pretty awesome guy and i think they build wheels. the store isnt too impressive but they can get pretty much anything.

Thanks all - for those who have purchased from trackstar - approx how much was a complete set and what did you get? (ex: deep v's, x-brand hub, y- brand spokes, etc...)

TIA

If you want the wheels hand built it's hard to find a better shop than bike works. But the other recommendations in this thread are all good, I have had wheels built by trackstar that were great.

Most of the wheel builds I had were from parts that I already had so I can't really comment on price.

my wheels all total with tax plus a soma everwear (40) and a vittoria rubino (30) were around 500. i have velocity deep Vs laced to red iro hubs with black spokes. i would expect around 400 for a basic build up including tax.

+1. I had wheels build at BW and they did a great job.

any thoughts on Mavic Ellipse??

i know many people who love love love them as street wheels and as track wheels. i also know people who have had many problems with: the bearings, the proprietary threadings, the soft lockrings, the proprietary axles....

I have never had any problems with Mavic on my road bikes and I do not know much about Deep V's besides peoples opinions.
