A post on a bike theft prompted this. Have any of you had a bike stolen and recovered it?

Where I live, kiss it good-by. You will probably never see it again.

Make sure you record your serial number. It helps with recovery efforts.

I got my own stolen bike back with the help of a passing bike commuter and a healthy dose of vigilante justice.

2 bikes stolen, 0 recovered.

I learned from the first one--after the second one was stolen, I called the cops, my insurance co., had serial no. and receipts in hand. Cops basically said that unless it showed up because of something else or I found it myself, it was basically gone. Didn't meet my renter's insurance deductable, so no insurance money, either.

If your bike is ever stolen, think of it as long gone, and be pleasantly surprised if it ever shows back up.

Many years ago my girlfriend had her bike stolen in Ocean City, New Jersey. We reported it and gave a description to the police. One or two YEARS later, (it happened a long time ago) she gets a call from the Ocean City police, "We have your bike." They arrested a burglar who was using it as his get away vehicle. Other than minor lack of maintenance, the bike was ok.

My 10-speed was stolen from my front porch in 1969. I was 12 years old, had saved up and paid for the bike myself with babysitting revenue, so I was extremely upset and also furious. I went out on foot, walked blocks and blocks, and guess what? I saw the creep who'd stolen it riding my bike! He was older than I (about seventeen) but that didn't prevent me, in my fury, from grabbing hold of his arm as he pedaled unaware toward me and yanking him off the seat and onto his butt on the pavement. He had no idea what was going on and I was in a frenzy, kicking him and hollering at him for being a bicycle thief. He got up and ran away! (I have to say, Emma Peel of The Avengers had a lasting impact on me -and a momentary one on him!) So, I got my bike back "the hard way" you might say.

UK users - log it here (https://www.immobilise.com/), for free. The police check the database against recovered items. They also check frame numbers against bikes found in markets.
